Großer Wappensaal im Landhaus — Attraction in Klagenfurt

The Great Arms Hall has a collection of 665 Coats of Arms of Carinthian Estates from princes, noble families and clergy of the 18th century painted on the walls. The artist Josef Ferdinand Fromiller painted them in the late Baroque style between 1735 and 1740.

Fromiller also painted the freso on the ceiling depicting the Estates paying homage to Emperor Charles VI.

The hall also houses the famous Coronation Stone that was used for the coronation of the Dukes of Carinthia from the 9th to the early 14th century. The column is the reversed base of a Roman Ionic column, probably taken from the remains of the Roman city of Virunum.

Der Große Wappensaal im Landhaus ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert. Die beeindruckende Barockmalerei nimmt uns mit in die Welt der Farben, der Macht, der Illusion und auch der Realität des 18. Jahrhunderts.

665 Wappen schmücken die Wände des Saales. Zwei große Bilder erzählen von den wichtigen Ereignissen - der Schenkung der Stadt Klagenfurt durch Kaiser Maximilian I. an die Landstände am 24.4.1518 und von dem Ritual der Einsetzung des neuen Fürsten in dem slawischen Fürstentum Karantanien im 7. Jahrhundert.

Der originelle Fürstenstein, der auf dem Bild verwendet wird, steht gleich darunter im Saal. Er zählt zu den ältesten Rechtsdenkmälern Europas.

Wer gut sucht, kann auch den besten Kärntner Barockmaler Josef Ferdinand Fromiller versteckt auf einem von den zwei Bildern finden. Egal, wo man steht, hat man ständig das Gefühl, dass er direkt zu ihm schaut.

Die flache Decke hat dieser Barockkünstler mit einer illusorischen Malerei gedeckt. Der dreidimensionale Fantasieraum öffnet sich während des Gehens durch den Saal.

Wenn gerade keine Sitzung des Kärntner Parlaments stattfindet, kann man auch den Sitzungssaal, den Koligsaal und den Kleinen Wappensaal...

Highly recommend visiting the Carinthian parliament building. It's open to the public. The hall with coat of arms of all the towns is beautiful. Can also wander through the assembly hall too and sit at the presidents chair. Lovely mural behind too depicting the Slovenian plebiscite to be a part of Austria in 1920. Only 4 eur to enter.
