A 'Gloriette' is a French architectural term meaning: 'a building in a garden erected on a site that is elevated with respect to the surroundings'. This is one of the most famous gloriettes and it sits on the hill above Schonbrunn Palace. Empress Maria used it for entertaining and the colonnaded area opens into an interior room that was used for fancy royal dinners. Today this room houses a dining room and there is also a gift shop selling touristy stuff and a café for snacks. We visited in the early evening so these were closed. There is a great view of Vienna from the reflecting pool in front of the Gloriette. The way to reach this is on foot, and its a bit of a walk. There are gravel trails criss-crossing as they climb the hill; the same type of trails that run in the gardens. I suppose this could be wheelchair accessible if one had a mind to do it, but when you reach the top, there are stairs only into the Gloriette itself. There are no restrooms up here, so use the facilities before you climb the hill. Parking is at the Palace only. There is no admission, the gardens and the Gloriette are free to the public It was lovely, but mainly it is for the view, and there were several couples enjoying some unstructured time. I can imagine this being a backdrop for elegant wedding photos.

Probably the cafe with the best view in Vienna. We were lucky not to have to queue and to have got the best spot right by the window overlooking the beautiful Schönbrunn. You do get the vibe of Viennese aristocracy though the experience was not perfect. First the service was a bit confused, my girlfriend asked whether she could get a coffee with soy milk 🥛. She received "yes" as an answer. She then wanted to make sure they understood her request and asked whether they do indeed have a soy milk. The answer was "no" which was strange as they even have a glass of soy milk as a drink in the menu. Anyway, I would expect such a touristy place to have alternative milk. The second thing that bothered me was the lack of music. It feels a bit without soul without it and has got a swimming pool vibe without it due to the acoustics of the place. For the same reason we were disturbed by the constant clanging of the plates in the background as the staff was stacking them up after cleaning. Just watch the video to get what I mean. On the positive side, the vanilla strudel was to die for and the coffee was good too. A bit pricey though that is expected in such a place. Cards accepted. Overall, a positive experience despite the negatives.

Would give zero star if I could. When the waiter brought our drinks to our table, he tilted and the iced coffee I ordered started sliding off from his serving plate. My husband sat right next to him. He tried to helped by grabbing the coffee, but unfortunately it was a tall heavy glass and it fell to the floor. The glass broke, coffee spilled on my husband’s pants, part of the seat, everywhere on the floor, also splashed on the neighboring table. While we were still shocked, the waiter immediately started yelling at us:”What are you doing? Why did you touch it! You made me lose balance!” My husband apologized politely out of manner, said that he was only trying to help because the waiter clearly tilted. The waiter refused to listen, no single apology from him, insisting that it was my husband’s fault, and walked away. We were still in shock, the whole cafe was in silence, the people sat next to us quietly started cleaning the coffee spill on their pants. They didn’t get any apology from the waiter either. There was a customer who looks local walked to us, tried to show her empathy and said that it looks like the waiter got a problem. Later, the waiter came back, but zero interaction with us, nor trying to clean the floor or anything. That customer started talking to that waiter in German, seemingly suggesting him to apologize to us, and the waiter talked in anger back to her, looked annoyed, probably saying it’s our fault. Then he walked away again. When things developed to this state, we felt that the trust between waiter and customer has been broken. We no longer trust anything this waiter would bring to us, nor did we feel comfortable dining here. My husband clearly tried to help out of a good heart. Nobody deserves to be scolded like a small child in any situation. So we left, with customers sitting next to us witnessed everything nodding to us. Not even mentioned that we had to leap over the coffee pool that the waiter didn’t clean at all. When we passed by the entrance, we saw that waiter talking to other waiters emotionally, talking about this incident and how much trouble we caused him. What a joke. We feel unfortunate that we ran into such an unreasonable and unprofessional person on our last day of our Europe trip. The palace is good, the cafe is at the best location, but certainly not the person who works there.

I'm usually not this strict with reviews but the location and the prices require me to do so. The location is one of a kind, top of the hill looking over the most beautiful palace, and whole Vienna is visible. There is a queue for tables, and the wait can be 5-10 minutes from what we observed. The outside patio is nice but has literally no view. Chairs are cheap and not comfortable. The staff takes time to notice you due to crowd, but the wait time is not too bad. The advertised cream cheesecake has no cheese in it, it's just cream in the middle of the cake. And the taste is simply average to mediocre. They look great on the photos though. They do charge toilet use, or at least the lady collecting money in front of it insisted on it. The staff said there's a sign saying that guests don't need to pay and that she can't know who's the guest, even though there is a waiting line to even enter the place - extra cash and "if it works - it works" kind of scam. It's 50 cents, not expensive by no means, but still shady move on their part. Monopolistic location requires you to visit this place if you want refreshments after a steep climb uphill on a sunny day, but otherwise I would not recommend this place.

The Gloriette offers a really great view of the Schönbrunn Palace. Historically serving as a place for dining, the Gloriette now is a tourist attraction. The structure sits atop a hill and is really well maintained. There is a pass to visit the gallery at the top of the Gloriette, but the tickets are to be bought at the entrance of the Palace, so if you’re planning to visit the gallery on top of the Gloriette, be sure to get he tickets at the counters near the Palace. The hike up to the Gloriette is a picturesque one. One can choosing from using the gravel paths or the ones through the tree cover. I tried both and found the path through the forest more enjoyable, albeit a little challenging. That path offers little alcoves with clearings where one can find table and chairs to sit and/or eat or just relax in the laps of nature. The lawns around the Gloriette offer a romantic and scenic site, especially in the evening as the sun begins to set. Do take some time to sit on the lawns and admire the nature. I hope you have a good time, just like I did!
