I rarely post reviews, but I just had to share this quaint authentic find for fellow USA travelers. We are traveling with Viking, which has been a joy, But we wanted a small private local dinner away from the crowds and touristy big popular restaurants. After our group tour of the SB palace, we "jumped ship" or bus and had pinned this restuarant. I had made reservations on email for 8pm, but after sunset found it easily just outside of the gate by the zoo. Though we arrived 2 hours early the host/owner welcomed us heartily and with perfect English. We had a perfect quite dinner amd felt like we were in an Austrian Grandmother's kitchen. The Veiner Stitzle couldn't have been more authentic with potato salad, delious generous and affordable. The owner took time to talk with us amd share the history inuding the cookbook. He suggested the mushrooms since they were in season, picked that morning wild and fresh. They were the best I have had anywhere. Our only regret, is that we were too full for dessert. We saw others enjoying bountiful homemade delights. I am sure Grandma was disappointed we didn't indulge. If you head to the palace, peg this gem as a must stop. BTW, taxis.and Uber were right out side at the corner and we had no problem getting back to our ship. The Subway was an easy option too.

All our best to Walter and his...

The food was good, and the price very reasonable - I think the best deal I had in Vienna, and that without sacrificing quality. The elderly woman who cooked and served was very nice. I went earlier than normal (about 18:30) as I wanted to eat before a concert I was going to later that evening. The place was empty at the time, and she was alone. I ordered pork fillets wrapped with speck (I already had schnitzel for lunch), with chanterelle mushrooms, and a glass of red wine (at least half consumed by the time of the photo). She gave me a generous glass of wine. Other customers came, and some other people she seemed to know. She explained and apologised later that normally she has help, so she was sorry it took so long for my food. .(I was not upset or blaming her, I just was in a rush to pay so I could make my nearby concert on time). She invited me back to have a drink later, an invitation I was sadly not able to take her up on as it was my last night in Vienna, and the restaurant was closed after the concert. I definitely recommend this restaurant, though perhaps do not choose it if you...

A little anecdote to describe this warm hearted establishment. My first evening in Austria, near midnight, just lost phone, everything is closed. Starving, I go from restaurant to restaurant to no avail. Then I stumble by chance into this warm and cozy restaurant, where the proprietor and two friends are having a cozy beer - they invite me in and offer me a seat at their table. It’s 11:30PM at this point, and Frau Schenck (the owner) walks me through all the best items on her menu. I pick the goulash; Frau Schenck makes it herself, and comes back with the best goulash I have ever had. It gave me the feeling of eating at my grandmother’s house, and I felt such a warm feeling of home even though I had just landed in Vienna. Thank you for your hospitality! Oh, and the history of this place is crazy. The building used to house the servants of Schönbrunn, but in 1801 the place was converted into the bar/restaurant it is today. Has been frequented by many famous people throughout history, including Strauss.

Maxingstuberl is a must-visit destination for anyone looking for an authentic meal of Vienna. The restaurant excels at delivering traditional Viennese dishes, with the highlight being their schnitzel and goulash which arguably could be the best in Vienna. The schnitzel was amazing. The meat was tender and juicy, encased in a perfectly breaded crust that was both light and flavorful. The goulash was rich, hearty, and imbued with a depth of flavor that can only come from slow cooking and expert use of spices. The succulent meat and robust sauce made it a comforting, yet sophisticated dish that left a lasting impression. The service at Maxingstuberl was also excellent. Ask Walter (the owner) for advice about what to see and where to go in Vienna. The staff were attentive, welcoming, and knowledgeable, ensuring a seamless dining experience. The restaurant's history, cozy ambiance and beautiful garden area looking onto Schönbrunn Palace made the meal even more enjoyable.
