Biplob Uddan is a park in Chittagong, Bangladesh, that commemorates the liberation war of 1971. It is also known as Joy Bangla Uddan, meaning Victory of Bangladesh Park. The park is a popular place for recreation and relaxation, as well as a venue for cultural events and festivals. Here is a review I wrote about Biplob Uddan:
Biplob Uddan is a beautiful park that celebrates the history and culture of Bangladesh. The park has a large fountain, a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation, and a mural depicting the scenes of the liberation war. The park is well-maintained and clean, and has many benches and shades for visitors to sit and enjoy the view. The park also has a playground for children, and a small lake where people can feed the ducks and fish. The park is surrounded by trees and flowers, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere.
The park is also a hub of cultural activities, especially during national holidays and festivals. The park hosts various events and programs, such as musical concerts, dance performances, poetry recitations, and art exhibitions. The park is a place where people can express their creativity and patriotism, and celebrate the diversity and unity of Bangladesh. The park is also a place where people can learn about the history and heritage of Bangladesh, and pay tribute to the martyrs and heroes of the liberation war.
Biplob Uddan is a park that I would recommend to anyone who visits Chittagong. It is a park that showcases the beauty and spirit of Bangladesh, and offers a relaxing and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. Biplob Uddan is a park that I am proud of, and I hope to visit...
Read moreI visited Biplob Uddan in Chittagong recently—it's undeniably a hotspot thanks to its historical significance and its evolution into a popular gathering ground. Founded in 1979, it honors Pritilata Waddedar and marks the place where Major Ziaur Rahman spoke the first declaration of independence in 1971 . With about two acres in the heart of the city and open around the clock, it had real potential to be a peaceful heritage park .
Yet my experience was far from enjoyable. The greenery that once defined the park is nearly gone—replaced by concrete food stalls and vacant patches. The lush gardens, benches, pond, fountains, and shaded leisure spots that used to offer solace have largely vanished . Instead, the park feels overcrowded with more than 25 eateries crammed in, and the structure seems driven by commercial interests rather than public welfare .
Despite being a known hangout—especially in the evening when vendors and visitors swarm in—the atmosphere felt chaotic rather than vibrant. It lacked quiet corners or the sense of reflection that history lovers might appreciate. While some online reviews mention that it draws crowds and remains lively in evenings, I found it poorly maintained and not living up to its status as a heritage site .
Given its importance and location, Biplob Uddan should be better preserved—not turned into a makeshift food court. As a hotspot, it's understandable people visit—but personally, I found it underwhelming and frustrating. I hope authorities truly restore it into a greener, respectful space rather than let it...
