The museum had an array of interesting exhibitions. Slavery in Belize, The history of the former prison that the museum is in, Different types of traditions, An art exhibition by a local artist, Beautiful birds, and An insect exhibition underway. They were all very interesting, and there is something for everyone. To me, however, the most interesting part was about slavery. It always blows my mind how awful our history is, and how we always find ways to justify why we do the things we do. How there's very often someone who for one reason or the other think they are more important and more valuable than someone else. Even though we are all human beings, equally important, since we are all needed no matter what part we play in society. It's the type of exhibition that isn't uplifting, instead it makes you think. And to me that's imperative if we are ever going to learn from our past. I also had the privilege of bumping into one of the employees a few times and she gave me a more in-depth experience and understanding of what it was like, so if you're able to get a guided tour or have someone to ask all the questions you are left with I urge you to grasp the opportunity. No photos were allowed, hence the pictures of the building. I highly recommend a visit to the Museum of Belize if you're in the neighborhood.

Interesting and laid-back museum about local cultures, primarily the Garifuna but also other groups. Has a gallery devoted to the history of the Atlantic slave trade, and another on the history of piracy in the Caribbean, and their affects on the cultural and political formation of Belize. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It’s the sort of place you might take a classroom of kids, but of course is educational for adults who are unfamiliar with Belize’s history. They have special exhibits sometimes.

I am off dual nationality. Irish and British. Born and lived all my life in the North of Ireland. So being an Ex British Soldier, I know a lot about the British Empire. However visiting this museum I would NEVER tell anyone I'm British. The horror that went on in the times that Belize was being inhabited was just unthinkable. I won't go into the history lesson, no sane person liked history at school but if you are in Belize City, visit this place. Sign the visitors book and please leave a donation.

If you decided to spend your cruise day stop simply strolling about the city then this museum should be on your list of places to visit. It's ten minutes away by foot from the pier where tender boats drop you off. The immediate neighbourhood is safe with plenty of opportunities to snap some colourful photos.

The museum itself has a limited number of exhibits and is still very much a work-in-progress. Your admission fee will go towards its further development. You can also benefit from a reprieve from outdoor heat in a nicely air-conditioned space and with access to clean washrooms.

Consider also the fact that for over 135 years, all the way until 1993 this building was the main prison of the country. A place with dark history where criminals were hanged, and slaves have suffered.

Three stars is because the list of exhibits is definitely very limited, so for museum aficionados there's not...

I enjoyed this museum very much. They did a very good job of presenting the history of Belize and it's role in the slave trade, as well as more in depth awareness of the ordeals that African slaves faced. I was less impressed with coverage of the Mayan civilization. It left a lot of questions unanswered. There were pieces that were not tied together. I did have a chance to talk with one of the guides. She provided me with suggestions for digging deeper into my interests. The visit was a very...
