Read moreTHIS IS NOT A TOURIST MARKET.
I’m very weary of hearing western tourists complain about this market because it wasn’t clean enough or organized enough or it was too hot and crowded or nobody spoke English. This is a market for locals to buy and sell anything and everything to and from other locals. For locals, this place is fantastic. I’m an expat and I love this market. It’s hot, dirty, crowded, claustrophobic, endless, and smelly. But this is how markets are here. If you are reading this and you are a visitor, please don’t go to this market with a chip on your shoulder. Definitely don’t go there and compare it to the “better markets back home.” If you go to Orussey with anything but the most open of minds, you’re just in the way. The sellers here won’t accommodate you, they likely won’t speak your language, and they certainly don’t owe you fantastic customer service. You’re a visitor in their country and their livelihood, go with respect or...

Like with all markets and many shops in Cambodia, have a rough idea of what you want to pay for it and be prepared to haggle. If you're a foreigner you'll probably pay more than a Khmer person but as long as you're not getting ripped off, don't worry about it, they may have sat there all day without a sale! The concept of just browsing is unusual here so unless you're interested in an item, don't pay it too much attention or you're likely to be hounded. A word of advice, take note of what shop or building outside opposite are visible from the entrance, because there are a few entrances and it's easy to get a bit lost and end up coming out another way...also not ideal if you're claustrophobic. It's right next to the Capitol Bus station so that's handy, there's cheap food stalls around and plenty of cheap guest...
