You know some of the most pleasant surprises are very close to anywhere. Ireland House is one such place. Not even an hours drive from downtown Toronto or take a train and bus. n even has a few secrets, like the possibility of a well in the basement. Also how well the staff and volunteers present themselves.Goof knowledge friendly and professional presentation.I think what I like is the fact it was a family home and squired as complete. The wood shed, chopped and ready to use.The kitchen built at the edge so it could be used year round. The old black stove, I am old enough to remember my mother and family preparing Turkey one Christmas in the UK on such a stove. The power was out. This places ignites such memories or the imagination, think about getting up, gathering wood, lighting a fire, hauling some water and starting your day.Oh yeah its -30 c. Well...

We have had great experiences with the school break camps in the past, so we were excited to try the homeschooling program being run during covid. It was AMAZING. We had the whole place to ourselves, and I was impressed with the protocols in place - lots of sanitizer, hand washing, and distancing. We made two really neat crafts, learned some interesting history, and got to bake gingerbread men in the historic fireplace! The staff, especially the kids' program leaders, are phenomenal - they are excellent with the kids, and present the history in such an interesting and interactive way. I recommend trying any and all of the...

Kate was a wonderful guide!! She offered to accommodate my vision disability immediantly, was knowledgeable, fun, and has such a deep love for history and the family. Its amazing to be in such a beautiful restoration with such deep, deep love put into it. There's so much care in this property and it serves an important role in the community via a seed garden for local kids.

I cant stress enough how beautiful the restoration work is. There is so much love and respect for the Ireland family and it really captures their lives. Amazing experience. This is worth an hour of anyone who likes canadian...

Enthusiastic, friendly staff. House itself is nicely presented with plenty of original furniture, which makes this a rare find. BTW during our tour somebody asked whether the dining-room ceiling was modified at the time the wall was taken down to combine two rooms into one. I thought about this afterwards and a clue might be that the ceiling beams have a kind of tie-rodding (looks like iron reinforcement to increase tensile strength) -- I'm told that this approach didn't become popular in N. America until the 1860s, i.e. 30 years after the date of the original building. Hope that helps.
