⭐ 1 out of 5 stars – Unsafe, filthy, and run into the ground.
If I could give zero stars, I would. Green Gables Bungalow Court is a disaster of a property — unsafe, unsanitary, and run by one of the most rude, hostile owners I’ve ever encountered. Our “vacation” here was a nightmare from start to finish.
It started before we even unpacked — we stood around for nearly an hour waiting because our cottage hadn’t yet been cleaned by 4PM, only to walk into a dirty and neglected property.
Safety hazards everywhere: rotting, splintered stairs with holes; porch railings barely attached; bees nests on the property that stung multiple members of our group; rusted fixtures; and structural sinking so bad the ice cube trays in the freezer had to be propped up to stay level, and half-inch cracks under the front door for the creepy crawlies to come in.
Filth and neglect: bugs and cobwebs in every corner, peeling paint on windows and doors, trash between the buildings, and furniture so stained and grimy we didn’t want to sit on it. Trust me, it smelled as bad as it looks. The salt and pepper shakers were literally rusted shut. The kitchen is full of dollar store amenities. The shower stall was so tiny a regular-sized adult can barely move, the lighting was so dim you could hardly see, and the smoke detector beeped all night.
Inside is no refuge — stained cushions, mildewed bathroom corners, cracked fixtures, dirty and ripped screens, paint peeling from every surface. Decor from another generation. The entire place is just so gross.
The pool area is so run down with broken pool chairs from another era. “Rustic charm” is not the same as neglect, and this place crossed that line years ago.
This place should not be listed for rent in its current condition. There are plenty of clean, safe, and welcoming places to stay in Cavendish — this is not one of them. Save your money, your time, and keep your kids safe by choosing anything but this property.
I probably wouldn’t have left this review (my first ever) except for the ride, hostile manner of the owner/manager who needs to enroll in some anger management and basic courtesy classes. Photos don’t lie. I’ve included many to demonstrate our experience. The only positive to report is the head housekeeper/maintenance woman was lovely. Five stars to her for being helpful, friendly...
Read moreWe stayed in a 1 bedroom cottage. The outside appearance was inviting but the inside of the cottage was a huge disappointment. The inside of the cottage requires huge renovations. The cottage screen door had to be pushed open and slammed to close. The screen was in poor condition with segments perforated. The main door opened and shut fine. The inside of the cottage was very dark even when the curtains were opened. The walls and ceilings are dark pieces of wood. The kitchen had all we required to cook but everything, I mean everything from cutlery, pots and pans were very old. The fridge and stove worked fine but were uneven and moved when opening the fridge door or moving a pan on the stove. It was difficult to operate with more than 1 person in the kitchen or bathroom. The bathroom had a 1970s style metal panels shower. I believe it was the original one placed in the bathroom when the cottages 1st opened. The inside of the cottage needed a good thorough cleaning and paint job. The walls in the kitchen and bathroom were stained and greasy. The back-splash in the kitchen had brown crud on the bottom as did the baseboard in the kitchen and bathroom. There was a brown and black crud on the bottom of the shower. The shower drain moved when I placed my feet next to it. There was hot water yet the water pressure was weak. The towels in the bathroom were old and stained! The bedding was fine and the mattress seemed new. We had the use of a bbq outside each cottage. The air-conditioning unit fixed in the window kept the cottage cool. |I would not return to the...
Read moreIt's hard to know what rating to give a place that you never actually got to stay at. Just know that my 1 star rating is based on their cancellation/refund policy. Because of covid restrictions, we could not enter Canada and had to cancel our reservation (made through hotels.com) for 2 nights stay here. Our trip was ruined and we were devestated. To add salt to the wound, Green Gables Cottages pocketed ALL of the $200 we paid for our reservation. I was told that given the amount of notice we gave-- about 30 hrs before check-in time-- we would not be refunded because our room was already cleaned and ready for us. While I honestly tried to be sympathetic to their plight (I wouldn't want their staff to suffer), it seems completely unreasonable to not even offer partial refund. After all, I highly doubt they paid their staff anywhere close to $200 to clean and prepare our room. And I do understand that us reserving the room in advance prevented them from being able to rent it to someone else, but they admitted to me that at this time of year they don't exactly have people lining up to stay. They were not unkind in our communications. I was offered a discount on a future nights stay (20% off during non-peak months, 5% off during peak season). Unfortunately, we do not have the means to make another attempt at travelling that far any time in the near future, and if we did, I don't think we would choose to stay at this...
