Yesterday my wife and I packed a picnic lunch for a little day-trip to Fort Saskatchewan, to see the museum. I had checked the website and noted that hours were 10-4 Monday thru Saturday. Upon our arrival at the warden's house we were informed that all of the other buildings, including the fort itself were locked and not available for viewing. WHAAAATTT??? This is ridiculous! If you can't view the entire area between 10 and 4, then the public needs to know this. If staffing is the problem, and I assume it is, then whoever is in charge of this facility should make certain that members of the general public are made fully aware of the restrictive viewing hours. Read moreThe Provincial Gaol in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, was one of the earliest correctional facilities established in Western Canada. Constructed in 1914, it served as a key institution for housing provincial offenders until its closure in 1988. The facility was built using locally sourced materials, including sandstone and bricks produced in the region, reflecting the architectural style of early 20th-century public buildings.
Originally designed to house both male and female inmates, the gaol was known for its strict discipline and self-sufficiency. Inmates performed various tasks such as farming, laundry, and maintenance, which were considered part of their rehabilitation. Over the decades, the gaol expanded in size and scope to accommodate the growing population and evolving correctional practices.
Today, the original site of the Fort Saskatchewan Provincial Gaol is preserved as part of the Fort Heritage Precinct. It serves as a historical landmark where visitors can learn about Alberta’s early justice system, prison life, and the evolution of corrections. Guided tours offer insight into the lives of inmates and staff, the structure of prison routines, and the significant role the institution played in local development.
The site stands as a reminder of the province’s correctional history and the changing philosophies in criminal justice—from punitive to rehabilitative approaches. It remains a significant cultural and educational destination for residents and tourists alike.

Read moreAs a teacher or 6 years, I can honestly say this was the best field trip I have ever taken my students on. It is structured in a way that they are constantly experiencing something new, in small guided tours that taught ME things I’d never learned before. They get to do absolutely everything you can think of and leave completely exhausted and happy. My very busy grade 2 class continuously exclaimed “this is the best field trip ever.” — I completely...
