Tried my first escape room ever!! Honestly I had no idea what to expect and the room we booked was the hardest so I already knew we would fail. But I was determined to have a good time anyway. Since we booked one day in advance, only pirate ship was left and I knew it involved lots of locks from previous yelp reviews. I had also read some general tips about escape rooms beforehand and knew to look everywhere and to think outside the box.
We get to the place and buzz 101 to get in. We are given a locker to put our things in and we then signed in and paid, went to the bathroom, and got our instructions. It's a very well made and well organized place. For $25, I had a lot of fun and so did my friends.
If you don't wanna know too much about the pirate ship one, don't read this part. Since this room is hard we are given a boost. We can choose the red serum which can add anywhere from 1-10 minutes extra or one extra hint at the beginning of the mission (normally you get 3). We opted for the extra clue because we didn't want to pick the extra time and risk getting 1 minute. The pirate ship room is at the bottom so we go down a flight of stairs where the employee tells us that as soon as she leaves the room we are free to look around. Once the employee leaves, your game master sets the scene and the mission officially starts.
The room is really well decorated and really puts you in the scene. I was SWEATING running around everywhere and we blew through our 4 clues in the first 20 minutes. It's true that there are A LOT of locks but figuring out how to unlock it is still pretty fun. I think the locks do distract you from the parts of the room that are more creative, and you easily get lost on which keys and codes you've already used before.
The flashlights are USELESS so I really recommend bringing in your phone, I know it's against the rules but their flashlights don't work and the room is already hard enough that I wasn't going to lose even more time being blind.
I also found it annoying to go back out the ship to go to the screen and see the clue but it is smart because you do need to look outside the ship sometimes and you can get lost thinking only the ship itself is useful but the clues make you observe all parts of the room.
Once time is up, your game master comes back and shows you how to solve the room (which is neat! I didn't think they would show you how to solve it). Our game master was great! Really got into her role.
We did lose but had tons of fun. I would go back and try another...
Read moreEdit: came back and did three other rooms here during two promotions promotion.
Original review: We did the pirate ship escape room. Well designed and logical, tight puzzles but just so many damn locks. Locks everywhere.
Edited review: Cabin in the woods was well design with the props but the puzzles were frustrating to solve because we knew we understood the mechanism, but things just weren't working or things were working but there was no indication that something happened (think about having a chime to indicate something happening). There was a puzzle that was not reset properly and it threw us off real bad, we focused too much time on it but it turned out that the puzzle was already solved and had to forget it and jump over. Had 4-5 locks, which is acceptable to me.
Illusionist was a good room with some clever puzzles. There were many locks and it was a bit annoying to try a three digit or four digit combination on 5-6 locks to test the number. There was a clue about bamboos that made no sense in the solving of any puzzle, si that threw us off. Otherwise, fun room
The other one we did was insomnium and this was the best room I've done in Montreal. The puzzles were tight and worked really well. The theme was engaging, there wasn't a single lock puzzle. I highly recommend this room. If this is the quality of the new rooms being made, then I can't wait for the new ones to launch at the opening of their second location. Well done on this one.
Overall the order was from best to worst: Insomnium, cabin in the woods,...
Read moreI dont leave bad reviews often but this is reflected in the service we recieved and the circumstances of the night.
Upon arrival i dont know what the heck the receptionist was doing, she literally sat there and completely ignored our group and just sat there doing whatever she was doing. No greetings, no explanations nothing. Only until my wife went to ask what we were supposed to do is when she finally decided to start checking us in. Checked our vax passport and then ignored us again. That was a very bad first impression to starting our night.
Game master showed up right at our appointed time. She was super nice and more enthusiastic than the receptionist. Now this is not her fault but as a busines they were running more rooms than there was game masters therefore our experience in the room also sufferred. Playing the hardest room here made it worst and more frustrating when we had to ask for help there was no help and we were just waiting around and lost lots of time in the room.
The room itself was pretty descent, the decor really suited the rooms and gave us the feel of the enviroment. Puzzles were ok, a few creative ones. Overall the room was fair for the price. But its unfortunate we just had a bad experience that night.
Game master came in at end and debriefed us and explained what was going on on her side causing the...
