Probably the worst rec center in all of the tri-cities. They always close for the most benign reasons, always understaffed, always at capacity, and never accommodating to the members of their community. Their program schedules completely interfere with regular operations and a lack of opportunity cost management. The entire property design is also an absolute waste of space. Two lanes for swimming and this causes numerous incidents requiring lifeguard intervention; all of this while their giant courtyard goes mostly unused. It's a rec center not a park.
Facilities and amenities are always broken or in disrepair, the materials and construction quality are terrible. Examples are the broken sauna door gas strut that always hits people in the back or feet. Showers go from hot to cold or shower room lights don't work, or the soap holders are falling out, lockers out of order, shower room doors off their hinges, etc.
Gym rooms aren't space efficient, they can easily fit more machines in but instead there's swathes of empty space, maybe because of the mismanagement they don't have money to fill this.
Staff are friendly enough, but their systems and operations plans are also not the norm. Over-collecting personal information for their systems and asinine rules like not allowing water bottles in the steam and sauna facilities are just a couple of things regulars complain about consistently without any markers for change.
Honestly, a terrible facility, if it wasn't so close proximity to my residence, I wouldn't bother coming here. Half the time they are "at capacity" what a waste of time for people to show up only to have to wait hours to get in and do what they want. This place just angers people who have paid the sunk cost to buy multiple entry passes or monthly memberships.
UPDATE: Barely a month after their annual maintenance and the place is still trash. Multiple showers aren't working again, soap holders all falling out of the walls, and the general cleanliness is still not great. But hey, they fixed the $12 gas strut on the sauna door, will give them that. Having been to təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre, in New West, that is the place other community centres should aim for in terms of standards. Poco Rec Centre, officially still a joke and exceeds all negative...
Read moreWe had a horrible experience at this centre, our child was enrolled in the Ice Skating Class - Child Level-1. Despite both me and my wife telling the trainer that he is completely new to ice skating and will need active support, he was not given any and left to fall on ice most of the time. The trainer seemed to be rushing through the program steps one after the other without waiting for the kids to complete a round. My child was trying to put his best foot forward but was feeling under pressure and trying to rush. This made him uncomfortable and he kept falling in order to complete the instruction. As parents we very well understand that children can fall during such programs and its normal to do so sometimes, however, in this case he was just left off to continue falling without being supported in any way. He went in hapy and came out crying, the instructor took no pain in helping him. We also felt no explanation of posture, steps to move forward were instructed or explained to the child. We from outside were explaining to him to keep his knees bent to avoid falling. This should have come from the trainer. It might be a routine for the trainer, but a child attending the class for the first time should be provided with proper instructions first. He also fell hard on the exit as other kids were blocking the entry and the trainer did not facilitate the handover of the child properly.
Being new ourselves we thought this is how they may be accustomed to teach but I was wrong, in my daughters class it was a different story and she was given some support. Overall, if you don't see how the trainer is teaching prior to the class and don't have experience yourself, you are better off staying away from these classes and do your selves a favour by getting a private instructor who will actually teach and show some inclination to teaching your...
Read moreExcessive Noise at Port Coquitlam Community Centre Pool & Hot Tub Area
Totally dissatisfaction regarding the extremely high noise levels in the swimming pool and hot tub area at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre.
What should be a relaxing and rejuvenating experience in the jacuzzi often turns into an overwhelmingly unpleasant one—more reminiscent of a night club than a wellness facility. The combination of blaring music, multiple loud wall-mounted fans, and instructions delivered via teachers microphone creates an environment where normal conversation is nearly impossible without shouting.
The music volume is controlled by lifeguards, many of whom are teenagers, and their preference for heavy metal and hard rock is not only unsuitable for a spa-like atmosphere but further exacerbates the chaotic environment.
This is not the standard one would expect from a community facility designed for people of all ages seeking wellness and relaxation. I urge management to review and revise the current sound policy in the pool and hot tub area, which by now average 97 decibels, like a Hard Rock Concert (Picture Attached).
A quieter, more serene environment—perhaps with soft background music, reduced fan noise, and better microphone use—would greatly improve the experience for all patrons.
At present, I would not recommend this facility to others looking for a relaxing or family-friendly aquatic experience.
Avoid it at any cost !!!
🔈 Recommended Noise Levels (in decibels - dB): Swimming pool general area: 70–75 dB (maximum)
Hot tub / spa area (relaxation zone): Below 60 dB is ideal
Above 80 dB: Considered intrusive and potentially harmful with...
