Rue St-Jean runs through the Saint-Jean Gate, a historical monument frequently photographed, in fact, this is the one gate that you see in photos. It is one of the entry points through the fortified walls surrounding Old Québec. Many shops and restaurants can be found on the inside of the walls near the gate.

Québec City has seen many battles and sieges. To defend against such attacks, a wall was built around Québec City in 1690. This original wall included 11 towers but was constructed hastily, having to be replaced three years later. The city’s current wall began to take shape in 1745, permanently surrounding the town.

This iconic gate is part of the fortification system comprising bastions, gates, and defensive structures that account for Québec City's renown as a fortified colonial city and the reason Old Québec was named a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Only three other gates (Kent, Saint-Louis, and Prescott) that were part of the original fortifications survive.

From the top, you can enjoy views of Rue Saint-Jean, a trendy street of cafes, restaurants, and shops, and Place D’Youville, a public square that is transformed into an outdoor skating rink during the winter. Climb the stairs, which will also open onto the walkway running along the top of the fortifications. As you follow this walkway to two of the other three gates in the stone walls, you will marvel at the view of Old Québec afforded from this...

The Gate of St.John, it’s the entry from Rue Saint-Jean to the fortified city. You can walk up the gate steps and along the ramparts and after, get down back to ground level, turn right and walk towards the barracks, Citadel, and Plains of Abraham on the banks of the St Lawrence river or continue straight and explore other monuments and places of interest such as the Notre-Dame, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Fairmont le Château Frontenac (see my review) Terrasse Dufferin or grab a bite at the many cafes...
