Very disappointed with our experience! When we came to QC last, I remembered having a good experience here and this was the first place I wanted to come back to when we returned to QC and wish we left the original memory of Cochon Dingue in the memory banks. Sadly, we liked the ambiance better than the food and service. Food was adequate, but did not taste fresh. Had the duck confit benedict and this is one of the worst. The sauce was not warm; nor was the egg or duck. The potatoes were the best part and partly because they were hot-ish. The food seemed like it was cooked in batches and assembled when ordered w/o reheating. Our server was so fake and unwelcoming. She spoke to us in what she thought was a friendly manner, but it came off as fake and condescending. We think she thought was good at acting to appease, but she lacked skills to be inviting. She never checked on our food only when she dropped it off and when we noticed there was no ketchup (which she took as part of the order), we did not see her for quite a while (over 5 mins) so we asked another server as the place was almost dead and servers were all bunched together and chatting and we wanted to start eating. Our server magically re-appeared when we were asking another server for ketchup (politely), she made a grandiose gesture and started to speak in French that it was such a calamity that it was forgotten (clearly thinking we could not speak French). After this she disappeared again for over 10-15 mins and we had to ask for coffee from a different server. It was all offensive and our server never came back to check on things again till she presented the bill and waited for the tip. She clearly did not get a good tip. The rest of what we would have tipped was given to the very warm and friendly host/barista who had sat us and end up making us the coffee we asked for. Side note - when we were leaving, our server was assisting the Francophone couple beside us in a friendly and animated tone. So it wasn't just a bad day for her. She choose to be lazy and unkind. The only reason for an extra star was because of the host/barista that we had dealings with at almost the end of the meal....
Read moreGreat location. Beautiful Venue. Ok food. Terrible service.
Arrived without a reservation for a late Saturday morning brunch. Luckily they had a few tables open and we guided to go upstairs by the lovely door host.
Once we arrived up there a blonde woman sat us at a dirty table when there were two perfectly clean ones next to it.
Once seated our server took forever to even come over and say hi or to provide water. By the time she got to us (she was cleaning tables & wasn’t taking care of other customers the whole time) - we just went ahead & ordered our coffee, mimosa & meals.
The coffee was terrible, tasted watered down like a diner coffee. Café au lait in a bowl was ok. Whatever espresso beans they are using are just not very flavourful. The mimosa was flat and it tasted like the OJ was old or really cheap. I had asked for no onions in my homefries as I have a sensitivity, but they arrived with onions anyway.
Oh and our food arrived before we had cutlery, water, coffee or mimosas. So either the kitchen is too quick or the service staff is terrible at their jobs. Watching our server clean the other side of the restaurant while we waited over 20 minutes to even have a drink to sip on and pass the time, was torture- especially when our food arrived before. It was like she forgot about us even though she walked around and near us a few times. She never came back to check on us, I had onions in my homefries, my toast was burnt, and my eggs were cold.
Keep walking down to Trois Garçons or another nearby breakfast place. Skip this place all together, it may be a convenient location & attractive but sadly I judged this book by its cover and it was a huge mistake. We will...
Read moreThis Cochon Dingue location is really nice. It's very different from the one that is in Lower Quebec, nearer to the river.
While that older location is classic and rustic, with small walk-ways and tight seating, this location is open and airy, modern and inviting. Both locations are very busy (for good reason), but I prefer this location overall. This one is still within the walls, but is very close to one of the gateways and so it could be considered "out of the way".
The food here is fantastic, and the service is even better. Everyone that we interacted with was very confidently bilingual, welcoming, and pleasant. It's incredibly busy during tourism high seasons, but I'm not sure about "regular days".
The food portions are fair for the price, and I specifically recommend the breakfast poutine. It's a big bowl of comfort and tastes great.
The atmosphere is busy, somewhat loud, but exciting. The decor is really nice, and the dining room upstairs is a great spot to get away from the majority of the commotion. You usually have to wait to be seated, but everyone does a great job turning tables around, so you don't have to wait too long overall
If you're in Québec City, I highly recommend getting breakfast or brunch at...
