There are plenty of parts that make up this square and plenty of activities that take place in this square which make it a great place to be. In the summer there is a farmer's market on Thursdays and events just about every weekend from movies to music to food. Did you know that there are two concrete table tennis tables here for your free use? Bring your own paddle and balls and have a laugh or two. Then relax by the fountain along Yonge St and listen to the sound of the running water or how about at the fountain at the lower level by the reflecting pool? There is a stage and surrounding amphitheatre seating for performances. Tree lined sidewalks with benches and tables are waiting for you to enjoy your lunch at during the work week. There are little grassy areas and a small flower garden too. North York Civic Centre and the incredible North York Central Library surround part of the square. Tucked behind the library is the Douglas Snow Aquatic Centre. Food trucks and restaurants abound in the area but I'll throw out a special mention for truck Taste of the Tropics for its jerk chicken meal. The large size which typically comes with two thighs and a drumstick, with rice and beans, and a side of either macaroni or cole slaw is absolutely delicious and satisfies, don't forget a dash of One Drop pepper sauce. For the price (you can use credit/debit cards), it is one of the very best meal deals you can find in the city and the sweet lady in the truck and her cook have built a nice commumity of lunch people here. In winter the reflecting pond becomes a great spot for skating. Enjoy!

Mel Lastman Square Rink is a popular outdoor skating destination located in the heart of North York, Toronto, Canada. Named after Mel Lastman, a former mayor of North York and Toronto, the rink offers a charming winter experience for both locals and visitors. The rink is part of Mel Lastman Square, a public square that serves as a hub for community events, festivals, and gatherings throughout the year. During the winter months, the rink is a favorite spot for ice skating enthusiasts, offering free admission and a picturesque setting surrounded by the urban landscape. Skaters can enjoy the crisp winter air while gliding across the ice, with the square's modern architecture and nearby amenities providing a vibrant backdrop. The rink is typically open from late November to mid-March, depending on weather conditions, and is equipped with evening lighting, making it accessible for skating day and night. In addition to the rink, Mel Lastman Square features a reflecting pool in the summer, ample seating, and green spaces, making it a versatile and lively part of Toronto's public spaces year-round.

The ice skating rink is seasonal and free to use by the public. Bring your own skates, helmet and protective gear. In the Summer, lots of events take place at this location such as Dance On Yonge, Alohafest, etc. during the weekends. Washrooms are available near the Toronto Public Library at the North York Centre. The TTC North York Centre Subway station is nearby. There’s on street parking along Yonge Street and Beecroft Road during non peak hours. There’s a small outdoor Green P parking right behind North York Civic Centre on Beecroft Road. Empress Walk Shopping mall is across the street, so there’s an underground parking lot under Loblaws grocery store. Entrance is right on Hillcrest Avenue. All public events are free.

I've been a fan of mel makatman square for years. The best cantaloupe I've ever had was from their farmers market years ago. When I used to work across the street I loved that I could walk across an join festivals. They have many multicultural festivals throughout the year. They're free! I went to the korean festival on friday and it was so good! So many things to talk about. The food was great! There was variety and new food i hadnt seen like the milk ice cream. I should have taken a picture of that. Its shaved ice and fruits on top. Looked so good but i was too full to get it. 1 of the kiosks had us follow them for a free pop it. Another one had us take a poc and follow them to spin a wheel and both nieces got free BTS key chains. They were so cute. There was a both where you pay $5 to try on traditional clothes.

Side note: Across the street is empress walk. It has movies and restaurants. There's a great winners close by at Sheppard centre. This area is great!

Back to mel lastman square: I find festivals there are always fun. I strongly recommend you go to one that...
