Had to give it full stars on my visit early 2018. Slick new building with two floors, each with a fireplace, and a heated patio for summer. Fresh, modern interior that is beautiful and comfortable. The high back booths must make you feel like royalty because you certainly look like it sitting in them. Time will tell if it wears well like the Keg Mansion downtown but for now it is on par for ambience.
Walked in for dinner around 7:45 PM on a Thursday. Pleasant welcome but there was about a 40 minute wait so we took the chance to sit in the bar area. It's beautiful there too and was jumping. Even made the look out of the windows on to Yonge Street seem glamorous.
Calamari and prime rib classic medium rare was what I expected from the Keg - that is top quality ingredients, expertly prepared and presented appetizingly. Pure tasty satisfaction.
Special word in for Elena G. She knocked it out of the park in making us feel welcome, taking good care of us and making it feel like a special night dining out. She kindly agreed to having her name and pic be part of this post too. Absolutely stellar.
There's three mega restaurants pretty close to each other here, the other two being Jack Astor's and Baton Rouge. Judging by the crowd tonight, this Keg is a more than welcome addition to the neighbourhood.
By the way, you have to find street or underground parking since there is no dedicated lot. But it is also between Sheppard-Yonge and North York Centre subway stations so it's convenient that way.
Check out the hours carefully, see the pic of the window. The bar opens at 3 PM Monday to Saturday. The dining room opens at 4 PM every day.
Enjoy!
Update May 2018: Enjoyed visiting this Keg again for a friend's birthday party. Great appetizers and fantastic service.
The patio is now complete and you can dine or drink there. It is absolutely fabulous on a sunny summer-like evening with a breeze! The interior is at its best after the sun has gone down but the patio is deinitely where to be while the sun is setting.
Enjoy!
Update April 2019: Continues to be excellent in atmosphere, food quality and service. Special thanks to our server Amanda in the bar area who made sure we were happy...
Read moreYesterday my wife and I went out for dinner to celebrate. We chose to go to The Keg because it’s one of my favourite restaurants. In my opinion it’s the best bang for your buck as far as steakhouses go. The food is tasty and the price is very fair.
This particular Keg, which is my favourite because it has a more modern design and decor. The hostess took us to our table where we were greeted by our server Oreste. An Italian young man (younger than me) with a very friendly disposition. He attentively answered my questions and my wife’s; patiently coming back at least twice while we debated the menu. I knew what I wanted, since I have their menu memorized but we were debating what to order for our daughter.
We decided to have French onion soups to start, followed by the peppercorn New York steak (medium rare) and the twice baked potato. Yes, we both had the exact same order because my wife has a rule of copying whatever I order when she isn’t sure what to get. Apparently she claims I have good taste or good luck ordering at restaurants.
The French onion soup was great. Good rich flavour and had big chunks of baguette steeped in the broth, submerged under a thick layer of melted cheese. By comparison the French onion soup at Hy’s for instance doesn’t have the chunks of bread but they put chunks of onion. Ideally I would like to have both onion chunks and bread but I would still pick Keg’s onion soup over Hy’s.
Our mains arrived and unfortunately they were a bit over cooked. We weren’t going to make a big deal out of it but Oreste our server, attentively and promptly switched our steak for a perfect medium rare. Honestly it was amazing, so juicy for a strip loin. The restaurant let us take the overcooked steaks home and I ended up eating them for breakfast.
With all that said, we would like to give extra credit to our server for going above and beyond with us. He was so attentive and friendly....
Read moreThe Keg at Yonge and Sheppard is our go too but we were really disappointed tonight. It was our first time upstairs as we are usually seated downstairs and it was a drastic difference. Typically the downstairs staff are very attentive, lovely and great. Tonight, the staff upstairs were not aware of their surroundings. There were a few things we noticed.
We ordered the keg classics which comes with a salad, sautéed mushrooms and steak and accompaniment. After everything was out, we realized that we were missing the sautéed mushrooms and were waiting for it to come out. After a period of time, we asked the server if the order came with sautéed mushrooms and she replied that the mushrooms ran out. We were confused as she did say anything prior and we had to bring it up that this came with the order. She said she would go check with the kitchen as they were “out.” After we brought it up she came back with more mushrooms and said the kitchen ran out but they found some? We believe she forgot and tried to play it off but if we did not bring it up then we wouldn’t have received it. The point of this is the principle that we should not have to bring it up and then be told that they were out.
we were sitting for the first time upstairs and there is a door as seen in the attached photos and the door had opened over 20 times for the servers to go to the patio. Many servers would not close the door behind them and the cold draft consumed the whole room. This caused many patrons to turn their heads but the door would remain open for a while so it caused our food to get cold. We were also cold and got slightly sick as it was so cold upstairs.
the server was very kind but she forgot to put pepper on our steak. We wanted to ask her for it but she was not around as often.
Overall, we were not happy as this is not the usual level of...
