Scout Island, located on the west end of Williams Lake off South Mackenzie Avenue, is a true gem for anyone looking to enjoy a walk or hike in nature. This beautiful area, which consists of two islands connected to the mainland by a vehicle causeway, offers a peaceful escape with plenty to see and do. Whether you're interested in exploring nature trails, relaxing by the beach, or simply enjoying a picnic, Scout Island has something for everyone.

Features of Scout Island

One of the standout features of Scout Island is the Nature House. The Nature House is run by the Williams Lake Field Naturalists and sits overlooking the large marsh next to the island. It offers displays, educational programs, and plenty of information about the sensitive and diverse environment of Scout Island. It's a great spot to learn about the local ecosystem, especially for anyone interested in wildlife and natural habitats.

The island itself features a series of nature trails that wind through a largely undisturbed environment, rich in bird and small wildlife habitats. It's perfect for birdwatchers or anyone who loves observing small animals in their natural setting. You'll find a variety of birds and other wildlife that call this place home, making it a great spot for photography or simply taking in the sights and sounds of nature.

In addition to its natural features, Scout Island also has a beach area, picnic grounds, and a boat launch. These amenities make it an excellent place to spend a whole day, whether you're hiking the trails, enjoying a swim, or having a picnic with family and friends.

A Community Treasure

Owned by The Nature Trust of British Columbia and leased to the City of Williams Lake, this 9 hectare nature sanctuary has been protected since it was purchased. The community has truly embraced Scout Island as a cherished place to connect with nature, relax, and enjoy the outdoors.

Whether you're a local or just visiting Williams Lake, Scout Island is definitely worth a visit. Its mix of well-maintained trails, beautiful scenery, and opportunities to learn about the local ecosystem makes it an excellent destination for walkers, hikers, families, and nature...

Scout Island makes you feel like you’ve stepped out of the city and back into nature. The trails are well-maintained and easy to navigate, perfect for a quiet walk. There’s great open spaces and forested paths with great views. The Painted turtles are often sun bathing on logs, and the occasional muskrat or beaver tend to appear frequently. It’s a great spot for nature lovers, bird watchers, or anyone just needing an escape from the daily hustle. Great little spot right in town that I’d recommend to anyone coming to...

This is such a neat spot for a walk. You are right in the city, and feel far away. The new board walks and gravol have been a wonderful upgrade, and there are so many animals in the area. We saw Swans, Ducks, Martin, Deer, and a Hawk. The walk takes you around the edge of the island, with trails that cut through if you want a shorter/longer time. Many view points with benches, and a spot for summer swimming...

Nice relaxing place within the city limits. We were able to walk around and see some deer and her babies and some beautiful white pelicans. I've only seen grayish looking ones in Florida so this was a treat. Lots of wildflowers and trails to walk through. There was a cougar in the area so we didn't travel to far from the view if others. All in all, a great day. Hope you enjoy it too..
