The Hall of Supreme Harmony, or 太和殿 (Taihe Dian) in Chinese, stands as the pinnacle of imperial grandeur within the Forbidden City in Beijing. This architectural masterpiece, perched atop a three-tiered marble terrace, exudes an aura of regality and significance. Its imposing structure, adorned with intricate golden ornaments, is a testament to the might of Chinese emperors throughout history. As the central and tallest structure in the Forbidden City, the Hall of Supreme Harmony served as the ceremonial heart of the imperial palace. The sheer scale of the hall, both in terms of its dimensions and the symbolism it represents, is awe-inspiring. It was here that emperors held crucial state ceremonies, reinforcing the dynastic power and celestial authority associated with the imperial throne. The attention to detail within the hall is extraordinary, from the meticulously crafted dragon motifs to the exquisite wooden carvings that adorn the interior. The elaborate throne platform, positioned at the heart of the hall, further emphasizes the emperor's elevated status during important rituals. Visitors to the Hall of Supreme Harmony are not only treated to a visual feast of imperial splendor but also gain insights into the intricate rituals and ceremonies that once unfolded within its walls. It stands as a living testament to China's imperial history, inviting awe and reverence for the cultural legacy it preserves.

The one thing that you have to be there to fully grasp is how massive the whole complex is. 8700 rooms. No movie or book or painting can convey that scale. Go early in the morning, as the crowds are much more manageable. Beautiful architecture and sculptures.

Take your time getting through the Forbidden City. It is a massive place. Do some reading on it prior. Probably best to go on your own, tour groups will go right up the middle. Here are some extra places to explore in the North Eastern section.

Hall of Supreme Harmony (太和殿), built in AD 1406, Ming Dynasty, is one of the greatest buildings in China. The extremely heavy roof is supported by 72 Nan wood pillars and had survived the magnitude 7.8 earth quake in 1976. However, it had been burnt down by three thunders and one fire set on by rebels, and than rebuilt. The extravagant decorations in this hall and other buildings in Forbidden City absolutely are the best examples for foreign visitors to get into Chinese...
