Meridian Gate (午门 Wu Men): The Southern entrance to the Forbidden City, the Meridian Gate is an impressive sight. Its five towers resemble a majestic flying phoenix. As you approach, you’ll notice ticket booths just before the gate, where you can purchase your entrance ticket. I recommend buying your ticket online to avoid queues. Surprisingly, no physical ticket is issued; instead, you can simply scan your passport, and the system recognizes your valid ticket. Arrive early to beat the crowds, especially during peak seasons. The Meridian Gate marks the beginning of your journey into the heart of the Forbidden City. Once inside, you’ll discover a meticulously maintained palace complex, with its distinctive architectural style. The entire Forbidden City is symmetrically aligned along the Meridian axis, making this gate a crucial entry point for exploring the historical wonders within. Remember to capture some photos of this iconic gateway during your visit!

China. Unlike the other gates of the Forbidden City, the Meridian Gate has two protruding arms on either side, derived from ancient que towers traditionally used to decorate the main entrances of palaces, temples and tombs. The gate has five arches. The three central arches are close together in the main, central section; the two flanking arches are farther apart from the three central arches, and are located between the central section and the protruding arms. The centre arch was formerly reserved for the Emperor alone; the exceptions were the Empress, who could enter it once on the day of her wedding, and the top three scholars of the triennial civil service examinations, who left the exams through the central arch. All other officials and servants had to use the four side arches.

The Meridian Gate, known as 午门 (Wu Men) in Chinese, stands prominently as the southern entrance to Beijing's Forbidden City. This architectural masterpiece, dating back to the Ming Dynasty, is a marvel of imperial grandeur and symbolism. Its central archway was reserved exclusively for the emperor's use, emphasizing his divine status. Flanked by two smaller gates, the Meridian Gate showcases intricate wooden carvings and vibrant colors, reflecting traditional Chinese design. Beyond its aesthetic significance, the gate played a role in imperial ceremonies. Today, it serves as a key attraction, providing visitors a glimpse into the rich history and regal splendor of ancient China.

I needed my passport to buy tickets into the Forbidden City. I'm not sure if this is standard or if it was only because of the 19th congress which had just happened a few days prior. Entry fee was 60 yuan/kuai, which is not posted anywhere and would be helpful to know. Give yourself a lot of time to walk around the Forbidden City, it is very large and filled with tons of tourists. We were unsure of where to exit (as we wanted to go straight to Tiananmen Square) and were chased down and rerouted.

Very busy, you will be jam packed like sardines for about 15 minutes as you walk through but seeing as how the forbidden city is ine of the main attractions, its worth it. Make sure to bring your passport as this is how you get tickets to get inside. Once you are inside there is plenty of space to walj around and plenty of architecture to see. If you just continue forward you will get to the meridian gate, cant miss it. Very pretty and would definitely recommend going

The forbidden city gate, you need to enter from tianamen to this area, the ticket counter is just left from the Meredian gate. The advice is to go early as there is a limit for daily ticket sale, you can get it online. Advise to get a guide as the place is huge, you might not cover all the place. We took automatic guide (not recommended get a human guide) that is offered in many languages. There are many more museum and place to visit within the area.
