Sichuan Opera Theater — Attraction in Chengdu

We booked a last minute ticket through a local tour guide in Chengdu (Mr Lee). He met us at the show an hour before and talked us through the performance in English. It helped us understand the culture and what to expect in the show. It ended up being the best cultural show we have seen. There were multiple unique performances throughout the show, with the main event at the end (the art of face changing). Really cool!

Worth reaching out to Mr Lee for cheaper tickets and the English explanation. He can also accomodate other tours to unique places in China (we didn’t do this, but when we return for our next trip we will be hitting him up to see the golden monkeys and wild pandas in the forests in...

Attending the face-changing opera in Chengdu was an unforgettable experience for me. The show was incredibly professional and captivating—it felt like it flew by in the blink of an eye. It was my first time witnessing the magical art of face-changing, and I was absolutely amazed! The performers’ ability to change masks so quickly and seamlessly left me in awe, and the acrobatic elements added even more excitement to the performance. Wow – what an experience! This is definitely something to put on your list when visiting Chengdu. Most of the audience were locals, which made it feel authentic and gave us the chance to experience a slice of real China rather than a tourist show. The show itself is breathtaking – the costumes, the singers, the musicians, and all the other performers were simply amazing. There are also a few surprising moments I won’t spoil, but you’ll see things here that you won’t encounter anywhere else.
