Elephant Trunk Hill — Attraction in Guilin

There is an old story that circulates among the Guilin people. It is said that Xiangbi Mountain ie: Elephant Trunk Hill (象鼻山) is the embodiment of a God Elephant, who used to be the mount of the Emperor of Heaven. It was separated from the Emperor in a war and stranded in Guilin (桂林) with severe wounds. A local couple saved its life and took good care of it. This animal fell in love with the life there and decided not to return to the heavenly palace. The Emperor bestowed a pagoda to help it suppress evils and protect people. Since then, it never left this place and at last became Elephant Trunk Hill. The Puxian Pagoda on the top is said to be the bestowed one.

"Elephant Trunk Hill, located at the confluence of Taohua River and Li River in Guilin City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is named because the shape of the hill resembles an elephant drinking water by the river and is known as the symbol of Guilin's landscape. The main scenic spots in Xiangshan Scenic Area include Water Moon Cave, Elephant Eye Rock, Puxian Pagoda, Yunfeng Temple, and the exhibition hall of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Revolutionary Site in the temple.

Water Moon Cave is close to the riverside, and the Li River flows through it, like a floating moon in the water. One scholar in Jibei of the Song Dynasty wrote a poem Water Moon Cave Rhyme which was carved on the cave, saying "In the water, there is a bright moon, over the water, there is a floating moon. The water is flowing, while the moon is still there. The moon is gone, while the water is still flowing." The poem graphically depicts the beautiful scenery of the Water Moon Cave.
