I spent a wonderful evening at the Ko Shan Theatre. The tickets are very reasonably priced. I sat in one of the rear rows and had a great sight line of the stage. I was surrounded on both sides and to the front by some older ladies with binoculars, and during the intermissions had some nice conversations with my seat neighbours. Although the theatre doesn’t have English surtitles, the staff there kindly provided me with an English-language description of the show that was very helpful (English surtitles would take this to another level!). This was a “very local” Cantonese theatre, as Hong Kongers would remind me, and I enjoyed every minute of it. *Note that my photos of the stage were taken during curtain raising and closing. No photography during the performance is permitted.

Ko Shan Theatre It is not easily accessible by public transport except by Taxi. It was built in 1983 as an open amphitheatre which later was rebuilt and re-opened for use in Oct 1996 into a new Theatre with 596 seats best for the use by the Cantonese operas, as a cultural centre and exhibitions facilities. I have the pleasure of viewing the dance competition in the IEDC-International Elite Dance Competition,2025 of Chinese folk dances. The acoustic designs and effects were quite good. Next to it is the public Housing Estate of Ko Shan Estate. Written on April 21st, 2025.

The best Cantonese Opera Performance Theater on Kowloon after the new West Kowloon Xiqu Centre. Ko Shan has 2 wings, the older one is much bigger, housing 1,031 seats. The new wing is modestly designed, has less than 600 seats, but the seats are very comfortable, lots of leg rooms & very spacious.

This conveniently located theater provides a perfect forum for live performances. The seating is spacious, clean, and comfortable. Stage is right in front of the entire orchestra seating. The orchestra pit is tight, but I am guessing that it still meets the needs of whatever performance is presented. We were there for Cantonese opera. Performances were well appreciated by all. The acoustics of the theatre were very good throughout the entirety of the seating area. I know bc I spoke to patrons who sat in various parts of the audience. Ushers were helpful & vigilant against recordings. Altogether we had a very fine evening of great, nostalgic opera performances made better by a...
