One of the interesting places to see along the Olympic Trail on Lantau Island is the Silver Mine Cave located a few minutes walk past the Silver Mine Waterfalls when heading north along the trail. What you will find is a small cave opening in the side of a hill. The tunnel only goes back 15-20 metres before you encounter a barrier to prevent you from going further. Just outside the cave along the trail is a pavilion structure with park bench eating. You will also find a panel with historical information regarding the cave and how was the location of silver mining starting in 1910. Unfortunately, no mention of any boom of sorts, instead it seems the mining eventually stopped due to low production. Give it a few minutes to read up on the history of the Silver Mine Cave and take a picture or two, then carry on with your hike along the Olympic Trail.

Breathing some natural air is always good in order to refresh and rejuvenate. Today we were going back to Lantau and exploring this short yet easy route. We took ferry in Central to Mui Wo and went back from Discovery Bay, with half an hour each trip. It takes approximately 2 hours to accomplish from Silver Mine Bay towards Discovery Bay. Not much people were there, probably it’s hidden in the island!?

The entrance is blocked. The view outside is good. It used to be a silver mine. To me, it is a little small for the entrance. and it is not tidy Pls do remember to visit the waterfall downstairs

To paraphrase Samuel Johnson, Silvermine Cave is worth seeing, but is not worth going to see.

Unless of course you're hiking the Olympic Trail in Lantau anyway, in which case you'll pass...
