In this area of Shau Kei Wan, also known as A Kung Ngam, the name A Kung, meaning “maternal grandfather,” comes from Tam Kung. Tam Kung is the god of the sea as worshipped by the quarrymen of Shau Kei Wan. In his place of origin, Huizhou, he was known, at a young age, to have the powers of prophecies (especially in predicting the weather) and healing. As such he was very relevant to both the quarrymen and the fishermen of Shau Kei Wan. The people from Huizhou settled down in Shau Kei Wan and brought their belief in Tam Kung with them.

This Tam Kung Temple is located along Temple Road in Shau Kei Wan. It was built in 1905 and is one of the oldest temples in Hong Kong dedicated to Tam Kung (Sea God Lord Tam), a popular deity of stonecutters from Huizhou in the Guangdong Province who moved to the area to work in the quarry industries found here around the turn of the 20th century. The temple is open from 8am to 5pm daily. What you will find is a traditional two-hall structure with a centre courtyard, covered with a pitched roof. Interior features include three bays, each with shrines and deities. There is an ancient bell and drum, hanging incense coils, model sampan boat and other typical Chinese temple inclusions. The exterior is of grey brick with mural above the entrance and reliefs under the roof ridges. It is a nice little temple that is well worth giving a few minutes to visit if you are in this area of the Eastern District. It is directly on route to the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence and can be conveniently seen before or after that attraction. If you enjoy seeing historic temples, there are two more in the area. These include the Tin Hau Temple on Shau Kei Wan Main Street and the Shing Wong Temple at the intersection of Shau Kei Wan Main Street and Kam Wa Street.

Tam Kung Temple is over 100 years old and was renovated in 2002, with its original design carefully preserved. In addition to a statue of Tam Kung, the temple houses a small wooden junk and a dragon boat; which the iron bell, altar and stone tablet all date back to the Qing dynasty. The boulder in front of the temple is believed to be the seal of Tam Kung, and was laid there over 90 years ago.

It's one of the landmarks in eastern region of HK island. If you happened to dine in "Shaun Kei Wan Main Street East", you can stop by & have a look.
