上海の「上海展覧センター」、昔の名前は「中ソ友好大厦」という建物を見てきました。もともと1953年に着工し、1955年に完成した建物だそうで、当時はソ連との友好関係の象徴として建設されたそうです。建物を一目見てすぐに、その歴史を感じさせる重厚な存在感に圧倒されました。

この建物は典型的なスターリン様式（ロシア古典主義様式）という建築様式だそうで、先細りの塔状の中央ホールが特徴的です。その頂上には高さ約110メートルにもなる金色の塔が輝いていて、当時上海で最も高かった建物の一つだったという話も納得です。中央ホールを中心に、両翼に展示室などが左右対称に配置されていて、荘厳でありながらも堂々とした佇まいでした。

今回は建物の外観だけを見に来たのですが、広大な敷地面積93,000平方メートル、延床面積も80,000平方メートルあるそうで、その規模の大きさに驚きました。中には入れなかったので、内部の豪華なシャンデリアやドーム、レリーフが施された柱などは見られませんでしたが、外からでもその存在感は十分伝わってきました。

私が訪れたのは平日の昼間でしたが、特に混雑している様子もなく、建物を見学するだけなら待ち時間はありませんでした。ただ、ドイツ領事館のビザオフィスに用事がある人や、展示会を訪れる人には、入場時に身分証の提示を求められる場合があるようです。海外からの旅行者や駐在員は、中国の身分証明書がない場合もあるので、その点は注意が必要かもしれません。
