The Museo Nacional de Colombia is an absolute must-visit cultural landmark in Bogotá! Housed in a fascinating historical building (a former prison), this museum, established in 1823, is one of the oldest in the Americas and continues to brilliantly showcase Colombia's rich heritage. The 17 permanent exhibition halls are thoughtfully curated, displaying around 2,500 remarkable pieces spanning art, history, archaeology, and ethnography. Each section tells a compelling part of Colombia's story, making it easy to spend several hours exploring. Pro tip: Don't miss the museum's café! It's the perfect spot to take a break and recharge. The beautiful courtyard setting offers a serene atmosphere where you can enjoy your coffee while taking in the historic architecture and Bogotá's weather. It's a lovely way to reflect on the exhibitions you've seen or plan which galleries to visit next. What makes this museum special: - Diverse mix of permanent and temporary exhibitions - Regular cultural events including concerts and theater performances - Educational programs for various age groups - Well-organized chronological layout - Incredible historical building architecture - Charming café with courtyard seating Tips for visitors: - Plan at least 2-3 hours to fully appreciate the collections - Include time for a coffee break in the courtyard - Check their schedule for special events and temporary exhibitions - Perfect for history buffs, art lovers, and families - Central location in Bogotá - Informative signage helps guide you through Colombia's history Whether you're a history enthusiast, art lover, or simply curious about Colombian culture, this museum offers an enriching experience that helps you understand the nation's identity and heritage. Don't forget to pause and enjoy the ambiance at the café - it's part of what makes this museum experience so special!

Do not go during the weekday. The schools come with the kids the kids run scream yell and are rough housing inside the museum. No teacher or guide with them they just run wild like rats. They have no respect for others or there country. Security won't say anything. It's a shame bc not everything is behind glass and when they break something or destroy something bc they are not being chaperoned I hope the museum will be ok with just an apology. Bc the kids can't afford to replace the priceless items, nor their parents, school, or teacher. Do yourself a favor and go on the weekend if you plan on going and enjoying it without feeling like you are at a daycare. As a foreigner I get to pay more money. They have very little translated into English with no audio devices offered. Guess they don't want foreigners to learn there culture to respect and like it . The bathroom has no toilet paper in the stall.

The National Museum is deserving of its name given that it’s exhibits focus almost entirely on the history and art of Colombia 🇨🇴, and given the diversity of material on display. For me, it is a handsome venue which I enjoyed waking through, and an interesting re-purposing of a prison. However, I feel that it is a museum that tries to do too much, leaving the visitor overwhelmed with somewhat of a collage of both meaningful artifacts and less important ephemera beginning with prehistoric antiquities and continuing to the present day. For serious students of Colombia history, however, it contains a lot of material thought and research. Well worth visiting but perhaps best appreciated after a course in Colombian history. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed my visit.

I came on Wednesday and I'm relieve I didn't pay. The Museum is free every Wednesday from 3-5pm and every last Sunday of each month. If you are not a Colombian citizen you have to pay in US Dollars a different price and cash, saying this if you need to use the restrooms there's not toilet paper, you have to BUY it, I mean, how come one of the MUST visit places in Bogota, which explain about it's History and Culture has not toilet paper for their customer? ... Setting this aside the Museum didn't fulfill my expectations; the structure of the Museum is beautiful and has a very interesting history but the expositions weren't that organized. I got overwhelmed.

Sso worth it! It's got prehispanic and colonial history. There are many different interactive activities for all ages. The patio is gorgeous. The audio links are not good so don't rely on that and all explanations are written in Spanish. Wednesdays is free admission whether you're a local or foreigner and regularly the price is 3,000 Colombian pesos (0.62USD) not even a dollar!! Once you manage to get here, connect to wifi for free inside the museum. There is a wheelchair accessible entrance and there is an elevator as well (not sure if it works though). You can go to many places starting here. If you're a history buff... 2 hours will do fine.

Nice museum about the aboriginal history and far more until today. Culture of Colombia! Entry fee is not too high, for students 3,000 COP and normal price 4,000 COP. The museum is located in an old castle-like building which is nice to walk around and there are nice things to see. It's not a typical museum I would say, also very good for photo-opportunities. There is an Art section as well with lots of paints and pictures. You can look at them without security glass. Statues and lots of historical goods to see. Spent here 3 hours to catch some culture.
