I visited this region by chance when my children and I decided to get to know the more indigenous side of Costa Rica. We left 4 star resort in Guanacasta Papagyos and just drove along the roads until we felt drawn to some place. Coco Beach was that place. (This was a few years back but I wanted to share these pictures when I came across in cloud.) This is a small homey town. With a narrow stretch coming into it through a country side with farms and horses. Its serene and inviting. Towards main part of town there are street vendors with local goods and souvenirs. Pura Vida is the national quote. Sipping on coconut water from a cold coconut we would buy from one of the vendors every morning along the tree lined road before hitting the cove like beach. We even inherited a stray local dog [Lucy] for 2 nights. The locals walk around barefoot here . I welcomed this town that was hidden from the fray and seemed almost hidden. That's a true vacation. We spend out days jet skiing and swimming till the sunset, taking in nature and a life in a different continent. My kids were so at peace so I was as well. There is a hesitation to share these places since what makes them special is the lack of traffic. Let's keep these...
Read moreAnyone who rates this beach any higher has not to been to beaches anywhere else. We and others in our condo complex had conversations about how trashy this beach and town are. Actually had to avoid broken glass every other step on the sand, trash in the ocean and all along high tide mark on the beach. Trash collection almost non existent so are trash cans ,trash everywhere you look. The locals(Tico’s) constantly burning trash in piles anywhere they can get away with it,smelling toxic smoke constantly in Coco is a everyday thing. Ticos also knock out there exhaust on scooters/motorcycles to make them louder so you constantly hear loud engines roaring around all the time. A scooter will go by and you would think a Harley is roaring past. The consensus of the travelers we conversed with all said it’s as if the Tico’s don’t want us here. Point taken! At 1st world prices and 3rd world services in Coco, there are much better...
Read moreThe best was the stay in Tropical Garden unit at Serena Suites which is just 10 min walk from the black sand beach of el Coco town. Pretty long beach and nice walk for about 25 minutes from one end to another. You'll need to take off your shoes twice because there are two small river bands you must cross on the way. On the South side there will be more Ticos, they are very friendly. Closer to downtown more tourists and on the North side again more Ticos. Water isn't the best looking and most definitely does not represent the blue pacific shores. Looks very dirty not comfortable for small children to play on the beach catching blue waves which you won't see there. For the Blue water beach you would need to go to Ocotal beach which is more convenient if you live in Serena Suites Condominiums of Playas del Coco. You can rent there from...
