In my opinion, this house and tours are being handled so poorly, probably the worst I've ever encountered!!!! Firstly, the staff on hand are a bunch of a-holes. Not one of them was nice, or offered a smile. All of them acted so bothered by the fact that tourists were there, especially the red-headed one at the front desk. She was downright rude to the man standing in line before me, I wanted to tell her to control herself and do her job.
Next, this place is booked a month or two out, yet almost everyone there on site was a walk-up tourist. This is a problem for a number of reasons. First, this is basically the only attraction in the city of Brno, so it needs to address its clientele better or risk falling apart. Next, if you are booked a month or two out, please find a way to host a daily walk-in tour that people can pay for at the door. It's not very hard, concerts and theaters do it all the time. Maybe your first tour of every morning is a walk-up tour that you can charge a higher price for not booking in advance, etc. etc. Third, there were 5 staff members on site that I saw, but only one giving tours on the hour. Maybe you can stop paying your a-hole staff that are doing nothing, OR maybe you make them work too and provide tours on the half-hour as well so that you aren't booked a month out.
I am writing the managers of the house to voice these complaints. I was honestly infuriated by the treatment of people on site. It was ridiculous, and all those staff members need to be talked to. I used to work for the Mies van der Rohe society, and never-ever would they have allowed such treatment of their clientele.
Nevertheless, the house was very well maintained, in beautiful shape. And worth a visit if you are a Mies fan and willing to deal with a-holes for...
Read more(Opinion) This architectural masterpiece demonstrates the distinct (new onset) of investigative collaboration involving ultra modern concepts between architecture and impeccable interior design of Mies and Lilly Reich. Thier study of onyx against the sunlight would light up during winter evening sunsets adding depth, warmth and dimension. An intense concept yet surpassed. Exclusive exotic woods from south-east Asia. From veneered palisander, zebra and ebony veneer, hence, ebony Makassar from the island of Celebes. The most recent extensive use of the ebony Makassar you will find in the cigar room of The One residence located in Belair, LA. Together with the stainless steel and glass harkens Tugendhat, and the fact Mies smoked cigars...my opinion, a touching tribute. Note, the sculpture, Torso girl turning, by Wilhelm Lehmbruck 1913, is from Mies' earlier architecture works, Krefeld Villas, Germany, 1928 and 1930. Greta/Fritz Tugendhat and Mies shared ideas and opinions between sculptors Aristid Maillol and Lehmbruck, hence, the latter. Moreover, this collaboration produced the most interior design furnishings: glass x-table, brno chairs, Tugnendhat chair to name a few...incredible foresight. Of note, Mies always deferred to Lilly before pursuing interior projects and never produced furniture prior meeting Lilly Reich, or after his departure from...
Read moreFor those that landed on this google maps page because they were planning a visit I don't need to explain the facts that one can find on Wikipedia's pages or on the Tugendhat website. The added value that I want to give you in terms of review is more for those who have not researched this prior to planning a visit. Simply said a must see if you are spending some days in Brno. This UNESCO protected villa will be of interest to everyone. So not just architecture fanatics. I have done the guided tours both in Czech and English and our guides were excellent in their knowledge, their wit and their active interaction with the group. They have strict rules but they have a reason for that. Only small groups are taken at a time and without reservations in advance your chance to come as a walk-in is probably 5%. For the photo enthusiast I recommend to purchase the extra ticket for a photo pass so you can take pics. You will not regret paying the additional 200 or so CZK for the photo pass. They have several tours available. Go for the big one. It's worth it. Depending on how long you spend in the garden - which is amazing during all seasons - I would count at least 1.5 to 2 hours. Yes there is a gift shop with some fine souvenirs and literature.. then just stroll down to catch tram 5 back to the centre.. .easy. no tripods allowed...
