Decin is one of those Czech cities where German architecture is manifest everywhere. Divided by the River Labe into two distinct quarters, Decin deserves more than a run-of-the-mill visit. Whether you arrive at Decin Hlavni nadrazi on the west side of the river or at the more convenient Decin Vychod on the east side, you should definitely start your tour by a visit to the impressive Decin Castle. Set on an isolated outcrop of rock that hangs over the Labe, it is undoubtedly the city’s main attraction. From the side of the square that faces the salmon-coloured Church of the Holy Cross, make your way up the stiff 300m-long climb of Dlouha jizda until you come face to face with the baroque entrance gate of Decinsky zamek. Partly restored, the huge inner courtyard around which the castle’s chambers spread out is a fine example of late Czech baroque flavoured with a distinctive spice of German architectural details. Go inside the Oblastni museum that occupies three of the castle’s chambers and you are in for a superb exhibition of arms and a selection of local baroque art. Just outside the castle’s courtyard is the chief attraction of the complex. It is a wonderful rose garden laid out on a rock-cut terrace that hangs over the old town. The species of roses that fill in the garden sections are kept in a super show of color and trim. As you walk along the passageways, you’ll come across rows of statuary that unquestionably complement in no small way the beauty of the garden. The spectacular view over the town and the River Labe goes as far as the hillside quarter of Pastyrska...

You can not visit the castle inside without a tourguide. There is no English tourguide so you have to use the provided audiotour (40kr) on a mobile phone, while the tourguide is speaking Czech to the rest of the group (you get used to it). You go at the tourguide's pace and not your own through the castle rooms, sometimes I wished I could've looked around a bit longer. The beautiful gardens are freely accessible, though. The Barok tour is currently not available, hopefully it will be back soon, I'd have loved to see it. Definitely recommend doing the other two tours. Our first (Czech) tourguide was very boring and hastly led us through everything. My audioguide in English couldn't keep up. The audio is in a Google Translate voice, not ideal, but you can also just read the text. Our second tourguide was friendlier and told longer stories, so I was also able to keep up using the audiotour. The rooms were gorgeously renovated and showed the luxuries of past times. I especially loved the children's rooms, with many toys that are recognizable until this day. The restaurant has amazing banana caramel crêpes (do order it when you get the chance!) and the shop has some souvenirs and books/flyers about the area. Overal happy to...

Po třicetileté válce odmítl Rudolf z Bünau přestoupit ke katolické víře, odešel do Saska, a zámek prodal v roce 1628 Kryštofu Šimonu z Thunu. Thunové ho přestavěli na barokní zámek, obklopený zahradami, a v osmnáctém století do klasicistní, dnešní podoby. Thunové provedli dvě zásadní rekonstrukce zámku. První, vrcholně barokní přestavba, proběhla v posledním třicetiletí 17. stol. na popud Maxmiliána Thuna, císařského vyslance a diplomata. Jeho záměrem bylo především posílit reprezentační funkci objektu, aby patřičně demonstroval bohatství a vlivné postavení rodu. Druhá a poslední přestavba zámku proběhla v letech 1786–1803. V majetku rodiny Thunů zůstal zámek až do roku 1932, kdy ho prodali z finančních důvodů československému státu a přesídlili do Jílového. V roce 1991 získalo zámek do svého majetku město Děčín a začala postupná rekonstrukce zchátralého objektu. The predecessor of the Děčín Chateau was an early medieval wooden fortification built at the end of the 10th century as a support point of the Czech prince for the management of the surrounding area, the so-called Děčín Provinces, and serving as a protection point for the merchant water route along the Elbe. The first written mention of this province dates back to 993, its own fortified settlement is first mentioned in 1128. This original wooden building was rebuilt in the 13th century to a royal castle, which passes under vague circumstances into the hands of the powerful Vartenbergs around 1305. The Thun family owned the castle until 1932, when it was sold for financial reasons to the Czechoslovak state and Thun family was relocated to Jílový. The state has established a barracks here. The Czechoslovak, German, again Czechoslovak and (between the years 1968-1991) Soviet army were replaced in its walls. As a consequence of the long-term residence of the soldiers, there was an extensive devastation of the premises and the equipment of the castle. It was restored to its property by the town Děčín and a gradual reconstruction of the dilapidated building began in 1991.
