Stunning beauty stores and maintained to show the history to the world what she was once. Enginering marvel by Finnish engineers. Unfortunately couldnt see inside as it’s closed to visitors during winter. Appreciate the efforts taken to preserve this. Excerpt for the information is pasted here. EN Submarine Vesikko is one of the few preserved submarines to have served in the Second World War. The vessel is managed by the Military Museum and is open to the public during summer. Commissioned by Germany and designed by a Dutch engineering firm, the CV-707 submarine was built in Turku and launched in May 1933. The Finnish state bought the submarine in 1936 and named it Vesikko. Before the Second World War, Vesikko participated in special submarine exercises and in military exercises of the entire coastal fleet and the training of submariners. Suomenlinna Shipyard served as the homebase for Vesikko during its entire deployment. During the Second World War, the role of Vesikko was to patrol the Gulf of Finland for any enemy vessels. In July 1941, it managed to sink the Soviet cargo ship Vyborg during one of its patrol missions. Vesikko also protected commercial shipping and other maritime transport. Vesikko was decommissioned as a military vessel on 15 December 1944. The Paris Peace Treaty of 1947 prohibited Finland from operating submarines. Other uses were first sought for Finnish submarines, but eventually all, except Vesikko, were sold to a Belgian scrapyard. Vesikko was left to dilapidate for years, until the vessel, which by then was in a very poor condition, was decided to be restored. After a lengthy and challenging restoration work, Vesikko started its second life as a museum submarine in...
Read moreOnce you enter the submarine, you'll see that the outside definitely does not reflect the amount of available space inside. Incredibly cramped and filled with all sorts of knobs and controls, you can only imagine what it must've been like having to share the space with up to 7 other people, for possibly months on end.
If you walk around Suomenlinna with the official map and follow the blue trail, you'll come across the Submarine, and it's also not hard to miss. Entry fee for an adult is 7 Euros, and 4 Euros for seniors/students. If you followed the blue trail to arrive at Submarine Vesikko and visited the Military Museum Manege (which is worth a walk round!) on your way, then you do not need to the entrance fee - you just need to show your ticket receipt before entering. The same goes for if you purchased your tickets at the submarine and work your way back to the...
Read moreFirst of all, this island is a WONDERFUL place to visit! The Submarine museum was equally fantastic to see! Not only can you get up close and personal with a WWII submarine, you can experience the tight quarters and get a real feel for what it must be like to travel in one of these things for months at a time! (After seeing it in person, I imagine those folks weren't claustrophobic!) Such a great experience for myself and my family! Highly recommend, don't skip it! Also, you pass by a snack and tea cart on the way over there, so stop by and cop a squat with some snacks before or after touring to enjoy the afternoon! The restaurant was super crowded, so this cart was perfect and we enjoyed the outdoors and our snack at...
