EN Kustaanmiekka is the southernmost island of Suomenlinna. Kustaanmiekka was the first island in the fortress area where the fortification works started, in 1748. The fortifications on Kustaanmiekka are organised around the central fortress built on the highest point of the island and the forework protecting the central fortress. They are built in a staggered manner so that firing from the higher levels of the fortification over the outworks was possible. The fortress guarded the main point of entry to Helsinki by sea, i.e. the Kustaanmiekka strait, and served as independent outworks of the main fortification.
