Église Saint-Pierre de Chalon-sur-Saône — Attraction in Chalon-sur-Saône

Although this doesn't appear to be a major church, it has great historical value for it marks the founding of a religious congregation that became a worldwide force for good. After Napoleon had come to power and churches reopened, a great French woman, Anne Marie Javouhey from Chamblanc, Côte d'Or, her three sisters and five companions made public vows in this church on May 12, 1807. She is the founder of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny, a world-wide religious congregation. The first Mother House of the congregation was inCluny, and the sisters maintain two communities and good works there today.

Mother Javouhey, just ten years after the vow ceremony at St. Pierre began a school in Paris, whose reputation for effective peer tutoring spread abroad. When a request came from the governor of the colony of Bourbon for a similar school, Anne Marie sent ⅓ of her sisters-five-to found the school in what we know today as Reunion in the Indian Ocean.

This commitment reflected her desire to reach out to people of color. She was an abolitionist and is recognized as such by the UN and UNESCO. She went down the west coast of Africa, and across the Atlantic to South America where she founded a village and carried out a successful process for the liberation of over 500 slaves. This village exists today, and some time ago welcome Hmong refugees who have become an integral part of the community.

In 2011 celebrations were held in the three cities where she was born, grew up and first began her ministry during revolutionary days when religion was outlawed. Memorial "forests" were planted in Jallanges, the place of her birth, Seurre, where she was baptized, and Chamblanc, where she grew up and where Cluny sisters have a community and secondary school. Annual events are held to celebrate and honor her accomplishments. Chamblanc is a place of pilgrimage for those seeking to know her better. The sisters provide workshops and different experiences for adults, students of different ages.
