Superb, small-town museum. Rarely frequented but with some real treasures inside. These include three A-List Claude Monet paintings--including a rare, tondo form Nympheas of 1908 and a glorious seascape. Even better, with so few visitors, especially off-season, one can easily have this entire museum all to oneself and commune with Uncle Claude all alone for 45 minutes or so. Where else does that happen in French Impressionist collections?? There are also several rare, beautiful Bonnard landscapes here (executed when he lived in the region), a rare late Sisley lithograph, and an eerie, terrifying Felix Vallotton landscape dated 1924 and well-worth a detour to get visually very frightened. This fine little collection also contains some great, striking, sensuous, and malevolent Paul Jouve exotic animal works also very rarely seen and worth close admiration. The Blanche Hoschede-Monet Museum is within easy walking distance of the main Vernon train station served from the Paris Gare St. Lazare (allow one hour of travel using direct trains from Paris to Rouen After a museum visit, treat yourself to a great lunch at the adjacent cafe/restaurant La Belle Equipe. The Cafe de France, on Vernon's main street leading from the Gare to the great Seine bridge, also serves beautiful, perfectly correct lunch fare including a magnificent Salade de Gisiers, very fine chef's own pates, and wondrous lamb. So go to...
