This museum is a very interesting and artistic mix between modern art, contemporary art, original historic pieces (like documents, letters and objects), music and only lastly: information. It is like walking through a scrapbook of the thoughts and works of the composer.
Artists did a good job capturing the personality of the eccentric, maverick and influential artist Erik Satie in the museum's strange visuals, its off-beat presentation and historical facts and artifacts in a very unconventional way. The visitor is shown and told (partly using a clever audio guide system that activates when pointing at something) fragments of the lifetime of the composer while walking through a surreal set of chambers, each filled with all sorts of art, original pieces and of course: Satie's music. Some highlights are: a peculiar collection of umbrellas and unopened letters, a room with a host of original manuscripts and artifacts (presented on thin sticks in the middle of a room), a strange merry-go-round contraption that visitors need to physically activate themselves to "encircle the music") and a player piano that plays Satie's three Gnossienes in a minimalistic empty room.
This having been a 'regular' museum would not have done the composer justice, and the artists who created this Maisons Satie museum did an excellent job. It would do the visitor a world of good though, to first look up some information on the life and works of Erik Satie to fully understand the atmosphere of this place, as 'explanation' does not seem to have been the...
Read moreErik Satie was a composer of erudition, wit and affability. None of these apply in any way to the Maisons Satie, an âexperienceâ (the word âmuseumâ is far too generous) located in two houses, in one of which the composer was born in 1867. I was welcomed by a municipal employee whose air of baffled hostility must have required years of practice. The tour of a few bare rooms painted in monochrome colours requires an audio guide (which I dislike on principle). My set was rather dirty, so I didnât use it. I donât know what mysteries the audio guide reveals, but there was precious little to appreciate in terms of Satie artefacts or belongings. You are informed (warned?) that the tour lasts an hour. Without the benefit of a greasy, heavy and uncomfortable audio guide, even when stretching it, mine took 20 minutes. The tour ends with an installation, a pedalling music machine called âla machine Ă Ă©motionsâ. It could equally have been named âintroduction Ă la sodomieâ. I learned that a cinema chain had financed the renovation of the house and creation of this experience. It did indeed feel like a walk-through fright show. Whether you know much or nothing at all about Erik Satie, les Maisons Satie will leave you...
