Crypte de Nice — Attraction in Nice

The crypt opened for visitors in 2012. I read about it prior to our visit to Nice and looked forward to seeing it. A nice lady at the Tourist Office told me there would be tours in english. And It was to be expected, since the crypte is to be found on several lists of touristattractions in Nice. How surprising, when I called the center to make reservations and was dismissed by the lady on the other end of the line. Not only couldn't I make reservations, because there are no tours in english (or italian or any other language for that matter), she wasn't very polite about it either. There is not even a brochure in another language, in order to make it possible to follow a frenchspeaking guide. To my knowledge, many visitors in Nice doesn't necessarely speak french fluently. And I suppose the lady who took my call never travels outside of France. My point is that the crypt doesn't deserve to be on lists over what to visit in Nice. On those lists you should find attractions worth visiting...

To visit, you must book tickets (you can do so on their website). The group size is up to 15, but we only had 6 in our group.

At your designated time, meet at the crypt elevator area in Square Toja. Close to the time, someone will come up the elevator or stairs next to it to bring you down. There is no need to be early, just be on time.

Clothing tips: we were in shorts and short sleeves and were fine for the 45 minutes. It was May and about 22 outside. It is cool enough that pants and a long sleeved shirt would have been comfortable as well (or perhaps if you are someone that is really cold all the time). Shoes or sandals are fine (just not high heels because the walkway is a metal grate).

We had a nice time here. It's mostly interesting from a historical interest point of view. I.e., it's not so much the ruins but the story and history along with them that is interesting. You'll want to be able to speak French to follow along. Our guide...

Personnel très mal organisé. Une expérience qui aurait pu être sympa et qui s'est révélée complètement ratée. Nous sommes arrivés à 4 à 14h05 (3 adultes dont une femme enceinte + 1 enfant de 5 ans). Le vigile de l'entrée nous demande si on a nos billets et on répond que sur internet ils disent qu'il y a possibilité de paiement sur place en CB. Il nous répond que oui c'est possible mais avec la guide pour le paiement CB. Il ajoute que le départ était à 14h pile et qu'il faudra repasser au prochain départ de 15h car comme elle vient tout juste de commencer elle ne peut plus faire de CB. Nous comprenons et repartons pour patienter 1 petite heure. Nous revenons pour 14h50 histoire d'être cette fois en avance. Nous sommes les premiers à la barrière avec d'autres personnes qui attendent derrière nous. On se dit Ouf cette fois-ci. Le vigile vient nous récupérer à la barrière à 15h10 (important de le préciser, car ils n'ont pas accepté notre retard de 14h05 mais eux de leur côté pas de pb). Nous sommes les premiers à rejoindre la guide. Nous sortons tout de suite les cartes bleues en lui expliquant nos déboires de 14h et que nous espérons cette fois pouvoir enfin commencer la visite. Elle répond que c'est limité à 15 personnes et qu'elle doit attendre de savoir combien de personnes ont acheté leurs billets sur internet pour savoir s'il reste des places pour nous par CB. C'est incroyable ! Évidemment il n'y avait donc plus de places pour nous puisque tout ceux derrière nous à la barrière sont passés. Nous sommes une seconde fois répartis bredouille sans avoir pu faire la visite. Précision : lorsque vous achetez vos billets en ligne ceux ci sont sans horaires et donc la guide aurait très bien pu nous faire passer nous n'aurions pris la place de personne. Deuxième précision : Nous avons dit à la guide de faire noter sur le site web qu'il fallait privilégier de prendre ses billets à l'avance. Elle nous a expliqué que cela fait plusieurs fois qu'elle demande à faire noter sur le site cela. Pas sérieux tout ça... il faut trouver une meilleure...
