St. Peter's Church — Attraction in Saumur

A beautiful historic church located in the heart of the city, surrounded by plenty of restaurants and cafes. The entrance is free, and when I visited at 2 PM on a weekday, the church was nearly empty, making it a peaceful place to explore.

The church dates back to the 12th century, with additional sections added in the 16th and 17th centuries. Inside, there’s an impressive large organ, which underwent a renovation in 2023 along with other musical instruments. The stained glass windows are particularly stunning, adding a colorful and decorative touch to the space.

Une église dont la construction débute au tournant du 12ème et 13ème, le mélange des styles témoigne de son histoire. A l'extérieur, le style roman de l'abside, du chevet, des bras du transept et du clocher, marque la première campagne de construction. A l'intérieur, la voûte du chœur montre un léger bombement, signe le l'arrivée du gothique, on est à une période charnière, le passage d'un style à l'autre se fait progressivement. La nef à vaisseau unique, adjointe au 13ème siècle, est de style gothique, deux chapelles voient le jour au 16ème et 17ème siècles, empruntant au style renaissance. Un enfeu de style gothique flamboyant abrite une piéta remarquable du 15ème siècle. Mais en 1674, la façade gothique s'effondre, conséquence de fondations insuffisantes. Après reprise de ces dernières, elle est reconstruite en respectant scrupuleusement les valeurs de symétrie du style classique en vogue à cette époque, adhérent également à l'esprit de la la Réforme catholique ou Contre-Réforme du 16ème siècle. Le résultat est l'apparition sur la place Sait-Pierre d'un édifice impressionnant, dont la façade est dépourvue des décors habituels des édifices romans ou gothiques. Truly magnificent church situated below the Chateau in Saumur. The ceiling is awesome - for some reason I am drawn to these structures and the ceilings particularly as it beggars belief how such amazing forms were constructed in the days before cherry pickers and hydraulic platforms.
