My recent visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg was incredible. I felt like I was really able to get an idea of the EU's inner workings. Before visiting, I was not aware of the sheer size of the Parliament, but their impressive building and impressive site was truly inspiring. The tour guide was incredible - he was not only knowledgeable but also passionate about teaching us about the institution. I learned so much from the tour and managed to understand the complexities of the inner workings of the EU. I was also lucky to be able to witness a live session between the European parliamentarians. It was an incredibly interesting experience and I learned a lot about how decisions are made and the processes that the EU go through to pass laws. In short, my trip to the European Parliament was an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend a visit to anyone who wants to understand the European Union better.

The EU Parliament's seat was not always fixed. The provisional arrangements placed Parliament in Strasbourg, while the Commission and Council had their seats in Brussels. In 1985 the Parliament, wishing to be closer to these institutions, built a second chamber in Brussels and moved some of its work there despite protests from some states. A final agreement was eventually reached by the European Council in 1992. It stated the Parliament would retain its formal seat in Strasbourg, where twelve sessions a year would be held, but with all other parliamentary activity in Brussels. This two-seat arrangement was contested by the Parliament, but was later enshrined in the Treaty of Amsterdam. To this day the institution's locations are a source of contention.

I visited the Parliament outside the plenary sessions. The tour was very informative, giving an insight to the Parliament, its functions and systems. Nice building with glass ceiling for natural sunlight and green trees inside, conveying the message about the importance of "living green". The tour guid was friendly, can 3 languages (French, German, English) fluently and was proffesional, giving us audio guides as he releazed we can't French. Interresting is that the security level was yellow and the process is very strict, with passport and bag check. One minus point because the visit was in French although it stood on the website that the visit time slot was in German.

I was disappointed about my visit to the European Parliament. It’s such a huge building, but the only real thing you can visit is the hemicycle and even that thing was under construction so not very interesting to see. For the rest, there were just some ‘interactive activities’ in the halls which were pretty boring. Besides that it was also very confused where to walk, super unclear. I only gave it two stars because it was free and you dont have to make a reservation. It’s nice to see for once, but dont come all the way to Strasbourg just for this. So if I can give some advice, plan more activities for the people and give us more used places of the building!

You can visit the European Parlement in Strasbourg for free without appointments. They offer a very detailed self-guided tour to discover how the EU works. The political structure of the EU is quite complicated with so many member states with varying interests. The audio and video guide do a good job in explaining how the European Council, Commission and Parlement work together to craft laws and policies. You can go to the Hemicycle where the members would speak and discuss policies, even watch live sessions there. The staff are very friendly and able to communicate in multiple languages.

Visited on a Monday afternoon. Through security and issued with ID badges then onwards with the audio tour via the EU parliament app. The app was glitchy and turned off every time you tried to use a different app with your phone which was slightly annoying. Overall the visit was ok and the main auditorium is impressive and the plants in the atrium are great. I feel a little more interaction from the staff would be helpful as you are left to wander around on your own with no explanation of the interactive features. The views from the terrace of Strasborg are stunning.
