The museum is very nice, clean, and well-organized with a lot to see. There’s an impressive variety of exhibits, and everything is displayed with care. A special highlight is the touch room for the visually impaired, where you can feel things like animal teeth — a thoughtful and unique addition that really adds to the experience.
However, a few things detracted from the visit. First, they do not accept card payments, which meant I had to walk to an ATM to get cash — quite inconvenient for tourists. Also, all exhibition texts are only in German. There isn’t even a short summary in English, so non-German speakers must rely on translation apps, which unfortunately takes away from the immersion and enjoyment.

In the Museum are presented captivating exhibitions concerning i.a. history of zoology in Kiel, marine mammals, exotic birds, deep-sea fish and European birds. During my visits I was enraptured with a big bright room, dedicated to whales and biodiversity, which was designed by architect Martin Gropius. In it are exhibited skeletons (or specimens) of various animal species which allowed us to observe how differentiate animal world really is.

The main issue was to pay! They did not take ApplePay or GPay, nor did they take card payments. Must be the last “cash only” place in Europe?
After a 1 km extra tour, to the closest ATM and back, we had 💶. On our return we got information about the second obstacle: Covid-test. Vacation-certificate was ok, but the documentation from the Norwegian Institute of public Health (for the kids), they had not seen before… 😳 But after a closer look, and a internal discussion, it was accepted. 🙌🏼
Finally in, we got to see lots of exciting stuff. 😎 The clear favorite was: The skeleton whales 🐳 🐋
