Burg Monschau — Attraction in Monschau

It was a small and nice hike to the Burg (Castle). I really liked the way it has been preserved. It would be great if they open the entrance to go atop the castle. I just have one issue - why no boards explaining the heritage of this castle? It would attract more tourists and make the whole experience even better. Burg Monschau is gebouwd aan het eind van de 12e eeuw en torent hoog boven de stad uit. Via een kleine maar stevige klim vanuit het oude centrum kan de burcht bereikt worden. De burcht is vrij toegankelijk. Eenmaal boven heb je een schitterend uitzicht over de stad en omgeving (kwa burcht zelf is er niet veel te zien). In de westvleugel van de burcht zit een jeugdherberg welke zich hier na de Eerste Wereldoorlog heeft gevestigd. In 1543 werd de burcht belegerd door keizer Karel V,, ingenomen en de stad geplunderd. Later werd het als Frans nationaal goed verkocht aan particulieren, deze konden het onderhouden niet betalen waardoor het in verval raakte en in een ruïne veranderde.
