Café Thelen — Restaurant in Monschau

Lovely coffeehouse in Monschau. While it’s not located right in the town centre, it has a charming spot just above the Rur river. We weren’t very hungry, so we only ordered two soups, and both were absolutely delicious.

There was just one waitress managing the entire restaurant/café, so it took a while for us to order and pay. However, to her credit, she was very apologetic, spoke excellent English, was incredibly nice, and explained that she wasn’t actually a waitress—she was just helping out as a favour for a friend. This suggests that the service isn’t normally so understaffed.

We sat down at tea time and had different food. We had the apfel strudel, the zander filet and the soup and the food was really delicious. The service to get the food was really fast but the service to get to order food and even to pay was really slow. The waiters were professional. Sehr schönes Cafe und Restaurant mit freundlichen Mitarbeitern und idyllisch gelegen. Die Speisen sind lecker. Das erste Mal, als wir dort waren, saßen wir im Außenbereich an einer alten Mauer, aßen einen würzigen Hackfleisch-Eintopf und konnten auf die Rur schauen. Das zweite Mal (am 25.06.2021) saßen draußen im oberen Bereich und aßen geräucherte Forelle auf einen Salatbett. Es schmeckte gut, doch wir waren schon etwas enttäuscht, denn für den Preis von 9,90€ hätte ich mir den Salat größer vorgestellt und es waren zwei kleine Stücke der geräucherten Forelle darauf. Es wurden 2 Baguette-Scheiben mit einer leckeren Kräuterbutter bestrichen dazu gereicht und auf dem Salat war ein großer Klecks angemachter Frischkäse - dafür hätte es aber mehr Salat sein müssen. Die Tellergröße des Salattellers mit geräucherte Forelle entsprach etwa einem tiefen Kuchenteller. Alles war schön angerichtet. Allerdings werde ich dieses Gericht aufgrund des wirklich hohen Preises für diese kleine Portion das nächste Mal nicht mehr essen.
