Decided to stay a night in Wernigerode on my way to berlin to check out the Harz Railway but i was pretty appalled particularly as someone who works in the heritage rail industry myself

I called a day in advance to ask if their service from Nordhausen to Wernigerode was hauled by steam and they said it was (even the DB app did too) so rocked up half an hour before it departed and the service was just a small diesel railcar.

We asked the driver if there was a steam service coming still and he said "no we only have one steam train and its not here right now" (we later passed two steam engines at the same time same station later on, (this railway also boasts 25 steam locomotives which is an insanely large fleet for a heritage railway) the service was also shortened to Eland with no prior notice so we had to get a bus from Eland to Wernigerode.

While waiting for the bus we called ahead to ask if they had any cab ride tickets available for Tommorrrow and was told "yes absolutely come to the station in the morning and we can arrange one for you to purchase" awesome. Headed down in the morning ready to fork over the fare and they told "oh sorry we are booked out until October, if you'd like i can arrange one for then?" I live in Australia so thats not really possible. Ive just opted to continue on to berlin early rather than frustrate myself further here.

My full time job is at a railway in Australia called "Puffing Billy" another large steam railway and we have had a good relationship with the Harz as they have helped us with mechanical works on one of our locomotives in the past. Im quite shocked at how poor this experience was. I had a much better experience with Dampfnostalgie...

Ticket office only opens 20 minutes before first departure so be prepared to be rushed.

Last speaks no English which is fine as I had it ready translated from their website. We wanted a Brocken return with the 50% off another destination within 7 days.

Sold us a ticket and off we went. Following day returned to purchase a ticket to Eisfelder, again had it all translated.

She wouldn’t sell us a ticket as said it had to be purchased day previously when buying other one, even though I had shown her then what we wanted.

Fortunately a lady behind me translated. The ticket office LFT denied working the day before, you couldn’t forget her with her pink hair!

Then said no she wouldn’t sell us it as should have said day before, showed the kind lady what I had asked for day before and she managed to get the woman to sell us correct ticket.

If it wasn’t for her it would have cost us €40 more. Have been to Harz mountains years ago and loved it however,

there has been a lot of fires last year and trees damaged by beetles so looks very barren as you travel along. Won’t be...

What a lovely way to spend a day, riding up to the top of the Brocken on a steam train! It’s not cheap at €51 for a round trip but it was worth it for the pure enjoyment of the ride behind the train and the fabulous views from the top of the Brocken. We boarded at Wernigerode at 10:25 and arrived at the Brocken at 12:01. There are places to eat and drink when you get there, toilet facilities and a small gift shop. Try and make sure you travel on a clear day for the spectacular views from the top of the Brocken. Wrap up warm as well and wear good stable footwear, it was very cold with lots of snow. Some of the paths and walkways are treacherous so be careful when you are there. We spent about 4 hours up there before catching the train back down.
