We stayed 5 nights in the Hotel Gothisches Haus and found the location to be perfect. Facing onto the main square, the hotel is a group of old fronted buildings tastefully married together by new build technology (literally where old meets new).||On arrival we parked in the multi-storey adjacent to the hotel; there were plenty of spaces and the car park is monitored by CCTV, simply take your ticket and swap it at reception for one that lets you come and go during your stay. There’s a small drop-off area near the hotel entrance if you need to unload luggage first (airport-style trolleys can be found inside the small foyer). ||We received a warm, friendly welcome with the gift of a fresh red rose, which we thought was a nice touch, plus you’ll find the rooms have a complimentary minibar comprising water, nuts, and various soft drinks which was also an unexpected bonus.||We had a first floor ‘Comfort Twin’ room, which was a good size, as was the bathroom. The shower was an overhead stand in the bath arrangement, which was OK although we found getting in and out could be quite slippy. The room was very quiet and the beds extremely comfortable, in fact it was so peaceful we slept all the way through on most nights.||Breakfast choice was excellent and catered for all tastes with items being regularly replenished, so if you turned up towards the end of breakfast you wouldn’t go without.||Housekeeping was first-rate and the staff were extremely polite and friendly, if your German is a little rusty or limited (like mine) don’t worry as some of the reception staff speak very good English and are very helpful.||In summary we had a lovely stay and would certainly return should we visit...
Read moreVery central location on the Market Square. The breakfast was excellent with a large selection. Nice room, bigger than expected in Wernigerode. Clean bathroom with a bathtub. Minibar with free water and soft drinks.||The staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful - by German standards, (but probably not by American standards, which Germans might consider excessive), and the younger ones spoke excellent English, if your German language skills leave something to be desired. The bar is furnished with comfortable sofas, and the friendly and service-minded bartender makes excellent drinks. We thought that the bar had a bit of an old school Overlook Hotel vibe to it. :-)||There is parking with surveillance right next to the hotel for 16 Euro a night. There are cheaper parking options (also free) in Wernigerode, but the location is convenient.||We could have wished for a minibar that was more than lukewarm (but you can always cool off the bottles in the cold water in the sink) and also a more efficient air conditioning. We ended up sleeping with the windows open, which would have been fine if it weren't for the church bells chiming every half hour. The windows were otherwise surprisingly sound proof, so it was a shame that the air conditioner was not very efficient, since the room was quiet when the windows were closed. ||If we ever find ourselves in Wernigerode again, we would not hesitate to stay there again - but probably not in the...
Read moreExcellent hotel ideally located on the central market square, of which we had great views from our spacious junior suite (it can be a bit noisy when they are setting things up outside early morning). Breakfasts are fabulous, with a particularly good selection of mueslis and cheeses, and a large slab of creamy butter tabled each morning. Coffee arrives instantly at your table, and service is speedy and efficient. We dined twice in the hotel's restaurant in the evening, and found it to be high quality, with interesting local produce (pott-suss was really tasty) and, slightly surprisingly, very good German red wine. Barman Andy was one of the best we've encountered - fast, lively and friendly, with a good menory for previous choices, and the ability to produce great cocktails, whether on the menu or not. Most of the staff spoke good English, which took the stress away from relying on my schoolboy German. Only criticism is that we'd have appreciated a bit of help getting our luggage to our room , as it was a long way from reception and involved corridor steps (though there is a lift fortunately). |Wernigerode is a good base for the Harz region: we managed to ascend der Brocken (one of us actually walking!), rode the Brockenbahn and the Bimmelbahn, and took a trouble-free bus ride to Quedlinburg, a World Heritage site which is well...
