Stadionul, situat în partea de sus a Sanctuarului lui Apollo, totuși în afara zidurilor de incintă ale acestuia, a fost locul evenimentelor sportive asociate Jocurilor Pythice din Delphi. Jocurile Pythice au fost unul dintre cele patru jocuri pan-helene ale Greciei antice. Se desfășurau tot din 4 în 4 ani, la doi ani după Jocurile Olimpice din Olympia și încadrate de jocurile din Nemea în Argos și de cele Istmice din Corint. La fel ca la Olympia, și la Delphi jocurile erau însoțite de o pace pan-helenă anunțată de emisari cu luni înainte. Deși pe locul doi ca importanță după Jocurile Olimpice, spre desebire de acestea, Jocurile Pythice erau însoțite de manifestările culturale și care le precedau pe cele sportive, la unele evenimente fiind permisă și participarea femeilor. Concursurile sportive includeau probe atletice constând în alergări pe diferite distanțe, alergări cu echipamentul de luptă, pentatlon, aruncarea suliței și altele, precum și lupte în diverse stiluri. Toate acestea se țineau în stadionul pe care îl vedem, cu excepția concursurilor hipice care încheiau Jocurile Pythice și care se desfășurau pe alt stadion. Din păcate, în perioada vizitei noastre, toamna 2022, accesul turiștilor era interzis în Stadion, fără a fi dată vreo explicație.

The Stadium of Delphi lies on the highest spot of the Archaeological Site of Delphi. It overlooks the sanctuary of Apollo and has a marvelous view to the Delphic Landscape. It was built either within the second half of the 4th century B.C. or even after the Galatian attacks. Its measured 178 meters in length and knew several refurbishment phases. Τhe Stadium of Delphi is the best preserved ancient stadium in Greece.

The stadium is located at the highest point in the Delphi Sanctuary, further up the hill beyond the Temple of Apollo and the theater. It was initially built around the 5th century BC but had been subsequently altered through the ages. Τhe stadium is the best preserved ancient stadium in Greece and was used for the used for the Pythian Games. It is a bit of a hike up but an interesting site to visit.

Na szczycie stanowiska archeologicznego w Delfach znajdują się ruiny antycznego stadionu wraz z linią startową. Odbywały się tu Igrzyska pytyjskie na cześć Apollina, uważane za drugie najważniejsze igrzyska po Igrzyskach Olimpijskich.Nie jest to jednak oryginalny stadion grecki, tylko arena rzymska zbudowana na miejscu oryginalnego obiektu. Stadion jest zbudowany z kamienia wapiennego i pochodzi z okresu rzymskiego. Po stronie północnej znajduje się większość siedzisk w 12 rzędach, po południowej zaś tylko 6 rzędów. Siedziska są oryginalne a najlepiej zachowały się siedziska z oparciami dla honorowych gości. - At the top of the archaeological site in Delphi are the ruins of the ancient stadium with the starting line. The Pythian Games in honor of Apollo were held here, considered the second most important Games after the Olympic Games. However, this is not the original Greek stadium, but the Roman arena built on the site of the original facility. The stadium is built of limestone and comes from the Roman period. On the northern side there are the majority of seats in 12 rows, and in the south only 6 rows. The seats are original and seats with backs for honorary guests are best preserved.

Greatly organised archaeological site. It's an about 30min walk from the entrance to the stadium. I would recommend comfortable shoes and water. Not accessible with wheelchair (from what I noticed), and a bit hard to access for people with moving difficulty too. I would recommend calling and asking about accessibility just to be sure. Clean, and easy to navigate and read info about what you see.

Wow! Roman stadium built in the famous Sanctuary of Delphi. Although this is a Greek site, the Romans ruled Greece from the 2nd century BC until 4th century AD. They built the stadium and the theater. You see these and the entire sanctuary with museum with one ticket for 6 euro. Park on the street and walk in. We had no wait but we were off season. I bet it is crowded as heck during season.
