Located on the mainland side of the city of Halkis and overlooking the narrowest point of the Euripus Strait, Karababa Castle has roots dating back to Roman times. The well-preserved final version of the castle was built during the Ottoman Empire to protect Euripus, an important naval base, from the Venetians. Although not a massive structure, it was extremely difficult to capture due to its commanding position. In 1823, Greeks fighting for independence besieged the castle but were unable to take it. As the Ottomans withdrew from the Balkans after the Treaty of Edirne, which ended the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829, the Greeks continued their struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire. Eventually, in 1833, the Ottomans relinquished the castle to Greece. Today, in the surviving western part of the castle, there is an exhibition showcasing the architecture and sculptures of the castle. This exhibit includes numerous architectural structures and gravestones from the Ottoman period, during which the castle was most actively used. Entrance to the castle is free and the exhibition can also be visited free of charge.

A real treat. Walls with ramparts, crenellations, canons, great views, a church and a very informative museum with exhibits at the top end of the castle (photo). If you walk to the castle, which is a bit of a climb, don't follow the road but take the foot track (has some steps) from the top (west) end of Pireos St at junction with Ifestou St. Just north of the junction continue west into what looks like a carpark and follow the paved path on your left (see photo; appears clearly on the satellite view in G-Maps). Admire the giant cactuses on the way up! Quite soon you arrive at the castle gate, inside of which follow the castle wall on your right to climb up onto the walls. Great views. Younger children will require continuous supervision on the walls. Free entry to castle as well as the fine museum inside.

The castle is open from Friday to Sunday 08:30 tp 15:00. No entrance fees are needed. It was built by the Ottomans to control the important Evripos stray. It has a nice view of the city of Chalkis. There is a small chappel inside of Pofitis Helias (you will find many chappel with the same name in Greece at the top of a hill. The most important thing to see at the castle of Karababa, is the museum located at the very end of it. It is small but it has exhibits from the three civilizations which lived at the city of Chalkida after the Roman's. The Italians (Fragoi), the Jews, and the Ottomans.

Türkler’in Eğriboz’a ilk gelişleri, Aydınoğlu Umur Bey’in 1333’teki akınları sırasında gerçekleşir. 1458’de Mora seferi dönüşünde Fâtih Sultan Mehmed Venedikliler’in misafiri olarak Eğriboz’a gelir.
