I'll start by saying that the museum itself is well worth a visit if you're interested in the history of Crete in general. It has some very strong artefacts and is laid out in a very intuitive and modern manner. Staff are friendly and it's easy to access. HOWEVER; it is definitely not as good as it could be hence my lower rating.

Artefacts, while interesting and well appointed, seem a little thin on the ground...in places, modern statuette artwork takes up a large amount of room. Some may like this of course, but personally do not as it breaks the immersion of the experience as a whole, especially in the quantity seen here. I know this may be unavoidable though due to lack of funds or material.

Information boards and models are very strong and make clear the history of Crete, especially Heraklion; the layout and map serve their purpose well.

The building itself is gorgeous and lovingly maintained (a large 18th Century town house, I believe, though there was nothing about it inside, sadly) and worth a visit for itself.

I can appreciate the use of modern artwork in a museum, even in this case where it gets its own room. But artwork which features the portrayal of ancient Minoan kings as tyrants and the way of life as borderline barbaric? Sorry, but no.

Don't visit if you're interested in ancient history and less so Medieval onwards; this is not the place for that. I don't count this as a negative point at all, but it is definitely to be considered prior to visiting.

Overall, a good experience which I personally found exceeded the Archaeology museum in some respects and strongly recommend to anyone interested in history. It's definitely nothing special though, which is a shame as the groundwork is definitely here for something which could easily rival the Archaeology Museum in terms of...

Osmanlılar’ın Girit üzerindeki emellerini sezen Venedikliler, adadaki hâkimiyetlerini devam ettirebilmek için birtakım siyasî faaliyetlerde bulundular. IV. Fakat Venedik’in Çanakkale Boğazı’nı ablukaya alarak deniz yoluyla Girit’e kuvvet gönderilmesine engel olması yüzünden savaş uzadı ve Girit adası da “Devlet-i Aliyye’nin ta‘lîmhâne-i harbîsi” hükmüne girdi.

Beautifully curated exhibition with varied historical content. Some examples from the Ethnographic displays fascinating with clothing, embroidery, weaving all providing insights to the the folk country self sufficient lives before. A World War II exhibit with audio pieces by Soldiers and Fighters . Also a fascinating Nikos Kazantzakis Collection, including his library, desk furniture from his Antibes Study. He wrote, “…I will willingly give the Museum… anything valuable I have connected to my long, laborious, intellectual life. Thus preserving the cell where a Heraklion labourer of the intellect has worked for so many years …” (Letter from N. Kazantzakis to SCHS, 9th January 1957). With the above words, he notified the Society of Cretan Historical Studies of his intention to donate personal possessions and archive material to the Historical Museum of Crete, a few months prior to death. Stunning. On the facilities there is a small glass elevator, ground floor toilets - clean and tidy. The cafe team lovely, with an indoor eating area, or to the front (pic) a terrace and at the south side a delightful tree shaded courtyard with cute fountain. We spent about 3 hours there and left feeling elated rather than the usual state of exhausted overwhelm...

Rating: 4/5 Price: 3/5 Attraction: 4/5 Entertainment: 3/5 Time: 4/5 Type of entertainment: introverted Short: -the price was 6-12, depending on your situation, I was a student so it was 6. It’s reasonable - lots of history, lots of artefacts, lots of paintings, coins and other interesting things, great for lots of diffrent people. Has an outstanding, I mean amazing, a massive model of old historic Heraklion also explains, in depth what each land mark was for, and what happened to it, they showed maps of its development and its influences. However the rest of the museum was just okay, nothing as great as that, mainly coins, uniforms, artwork to show the influences of diffrent cultures on it. However the room of guns and historic Crete living was intresting. - entertainment in the first room was very visually stimulating, with very easy to understand historic writing. However after that it was less stimulating, only because the first room was great. -30 mins-1 hour, depends how much you wanna read and interact. Details: follow the maps because it shows the museum the way it’s intended, I’m not saying this to sound silly and obvious, the museum is not in order naturally you have to take specifics routes.

It’s a nice enough museum, though it doesn’t have a strong feeling to it. It’s not as impressive as the nearby archeological museum, for example, or does it have the charm of any of the museums in Chania. In addition, I was very annoyed and bothered by constantly being followed into every room and told that the museum was closing soon. I certainly didn’t need THREE people to tell me this. It was my intention to leave before the closing. I was very aware of the time. If they don’t want people to stay past 3:45, they should state that as their closing time, not 4:00. If they didn’t want people staying that long, they shouldn’t even have sold me a ticket. I understand that the employees have Saturday afternoon plans, but the behavior felt incredibly rude and unprofessional. I’d rate this museum as “see if you find yourself in Heraklion and have no idea what to do with your time.”
