Situated in Plateia Kornarou, a central square in Heraklion's old town, surrounded by a variety of stores, bakeries & the markets Walking past u may not even notice the fountain is there especially in summer as it’s in a very central area with a busy cafe & a taxi stand in the plateia.
The Bembo Fountain in is a stunning historical landmark built between 1552 and 1554 by Gianmatteo Bebo. This 16th-century fountain features a Venetian coat of arms and a Roman-era statue, showcasing the city's rich cultural heritage. The Fountain was the first running water source in Heraklion, making it a vital part of the city's infrastructure. It’s a large stone structure with a spout and basin, adorned with Venetian family coats of arms and a headless Roman statue.
Like a lot of Historic structures all over Crete u will find ruins from multiple historic periods in one place.
There’s a Roman Mosaic near the fountain & a Tutkish sebil built in 1776 which is the only surviving example of a sebil in Heaklion. It is a round domed building punctuated by semicircular barred windows, interesting circular architecture & a beautiful door. The building has acted as a cafe on & off over many decades.

You also need to wach out for the beggers who use their children to place flower reefs on your head and then expect you to pay for it, they can be quite forceful as well so just be ware. Apart from that it's a lovely place to visit with its architecture and...
