Step Back in Time – Exploring the Acropolis of Rhodes and Surrounding Ancient Wonders

Visiting the Acropolis of Rhodes is like walking through a portal into ancient history. Perched on Monte Smith hill and surrounded by greenery, the site is a treasure trove of remarkable ruins, each whispering stories from over 2,300 years ago.

Start your journey with the Olympic Stadium, beautifully preserved and still echoing the spirit of ancient athleticism. You can almost picture the competitions that once took place here. Just a short walk away, you’ll find the small but impressive Odeon, a Roman-era theater that once hosted music and poetry performances – it’s a peaceful spot that brings the grandeur of the past to life.

The crown jewel, of course, is the Temple of Apollo, with its tall columns standing proudly against the sky. Though partially restored, the site still evokes the sacred atmosphere of classical worship. As you explore further, you’ll come across scattered ruins, columns, and steps that once formed temples, sanctuaries, and public spaces — all part of the ancient city’s rich tapestry.

Besides the historical significance, the views from the hilltop are absolutely stunning. Overlooking the sea and the modern town of Rhodes, it’s a perfect mix of natural beauty and cultural depth. Don’t be surprised if you lose track of time — there’s something new to admire around every corner.

A few tips: • Wear comfortable sneakers – the paths are uneven, and you’ll be doing a fair bit of walking. • Bring plenty of water, especially in summer – shade is limited, and the sun can be intense. • A camera is a must – both for the ruins and the sweeping panoramic views.

In short: This area is a must-see for history lovers, architecture buffs, or anyone who wants to experience the soul of ancient Greece. It’s not just a sightseeing spot — it’s an experience that transports you centuries into the past. Don’t miss it while...

The Acropolis (high city) of Rhodes is an interesting place to visit as part of your adventure to the medieval old city of Rhodes.

The Acropolis was built during the Hellenistic Age from 500 - 300 BC. This was a time period when Rhodes had strategic value as an entrance to the Aegean Sea spanning from the Mediterranean, Greece and Macedonia.

There are lots of ruins and remnants of structures throughout this park where you can find four massive columns (currently surrounded by scaffolding) of the temple of Athena and Zeus. The Odeon theatre and the stadium.

There has been extensive restoration efforts made to unearth much of the structures, but there is much more to be done to have a better appreciation of this historic landmark.

I suggest that you try to visit this location near sunset hours as there is a beautiful scenic walkway were you can enjoy a panoramic view of the waterfront coast line and of the Medieval city of Rhodes.

Access was free but was in a terrible state of repair. Scaffolding that has been up around the temple remains for well over 8 years now was itself in poor repair. They used to charge entry but thats no longer the case now as its being totally neglected. Certainly no longer worth a visit unless you are a real historian, which is a terrible shame. To think that some sight seeing tour operators charge unsuspecting holidaymakers 20€ to visit it. Unfortunately this historical structure is testimony to how little the Authorities are interested in their real heritage. I've travelled a few of the Greek islands and have increasingly discovered that the fantastic Greek Culture, Heritage and Mythology has been degraded to selling ceramics, mytholgical glass images of eyes, olive oil, leather goods or figures of animals or insects appropriate to that island, in the case of Rhodes you can add figures of the Templar knights to that list. What a shame and degradation of such a colourful, wonderful and...

The place is totaly run down and dilapidated , there is nothing there in terms of information , not even a bus stop (hop on-off dropped us there for 12 euro) . So there is nothing that tells you where you are and what you are seeing , no staff , no entrance fee , no shops , no souvenirs ,no info signs , nothing .There is garbage spread around , it seems that nobody is taking care of the place . Also the restauration work look dubious , you cant tell what work is beeing done . The few things to see are appealing only to those who love history , especially greek history. I am a history lover and for me it was important to walk there , to sit in the statium and to admire what is left of the temple of Apolo . If you can see this site with your mind's eye and imagine what was it like then it is worth it . Visited in aug 2021 during the worst heatwave in decades and corona pandemic .
