The Venetian Castle of Parga is one of the most important historical landmarks in the area, with a rich history and impressive architecture. Here is some information about the castle. The Castle's History Construction and Expansion. The castle of Parga was initially built in the 14th century by the Normans and later reinforced by the Venetians in the 16th century. The Venetians renovated and expanded it to protect it from Ottoman and pirate attacks. The castle fell into Ottoman hands in 1792 and remained under their control until the liberation of the area in 1913. During Venetian and Ottoman occupation, the castle was used as a fortress and military base. Due to its strategic position, the castle played a significant role in the defense of the area and was a central point of control over the sea routes in the Ionian Sea. The castle features typical elements of Venetian architecture, such as high walls, battlements, and watchtowers. Reinforcement and Renovation: Both Venetians and Ottomans made various improvements and reinforcements to maintain its military strength. Inside the castle, there are various buildings, such as warehouses, barracks, and other auxiliary structures. The castle is open to visitors during the day, usually from morning until afternoon. It's a good idea to confirm the exact opening hours before your visit, as these may change depending on the season. The best time to visit the castle is early in the morning or late in the afternoon. These times offer milder weather, fewer crowds, and stunning views as the sun rises or sets. The castle is situated on a hill and offers a panoramic view of the town of Parga, the Ionian Sea, and the surrounding islands. It is an ideal spot for photos and to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Visiting the Venetian Castle of Parga is a unique experience that combines historical knowledge, architectural interest, and natural beauty.

Simply perfect. A bit from the story of the castle. The castle has been built by the Normands in 1390. The fortress has been destroyed by the famous pirate Barbarosa in 1537 and again in 1571 by Ali Pasha. Then in 1792 was the second birthday date of the castle when the Venetians rebuilt it together with Parga people on that time. From up there you have an amazing view of Parga on one side and beach of Valtos on the other side. You need to be careful as you climb up and take your time to walk around hidden chambers. There is a nice restaurant on top where you can sit and rest and enjoy your drink while looking to that amazing view...its a must for everyone visiting this magnificent place.

Completely under-appreciated castle. Open 24/7 with warning signs to enter at your own risk. Castle is gorgeous and un-restored. It shows the original rooms, walls, halls- the whole bit. It was a major deterant to the ottomans for over 100 years before betrayal. When it was GIVEN to the Ottomans, it was modified. You can see the mods with different limestone mortar. This castle was built very early in Venitian defense and shows it with: no cording ( the raised "cord" of stone before the top that kicked cannon balls back to the attacker) no mid-level musket slots, no attempt at a ditch or moat (sappers).....etc. you MUST visit if you appreciate Greek/venitian early defense!

Ruins of a castle with stunning views around and a lot to explore. Signs point out that visiting is at your own risk and for a good reason. Many trails are overgrown and steep. But for the full experience a bit of climbing is rewarded with the old rooms and chambers which are still there. Bring good shoes! Or stay at the flat part around the enterance and drink something in the cafe (early season now in april and not open yet). For everyone something here. I spend well over an hour discovering the grounds

This is Greece! No restoration, falling apart, left to it's fate, dangerous to walk through, paths not cleared, not even one person administrating, garbage and human feces all over the place!?! Very disgraceful to find out that the Venetian Castle of Parga is not being taken care, at least from the wealthy money making locals. Greeks don't care about their history, nor their monuments, we only care about making fast & easy money. That's greek tourism, that's the true greek spirit. Come and get it!

Fascinating place with that feel of history seeping through the brick. You'll need a wikipedia page open as there's nothing to help you understand what it is or why it's there. But once you read a bit it really comes to life. Not for the faint hearted. If you have trouble with your knees you're not going to enjoy it. It's treacherous in parts and good boots and a sure foot are important. As is water. There are no cafes, shops, guides, just ruins. But the views and the exploration are amazing.
