Apparently, this is the highest bridge in Central America. And I guess it is impressive to an extent. The big Guatemalan flag in the middle is a photo op (don't worry; tons of people stop in the middle of the bridge for the pic... another car is not going to make a difference), and the views are pretty cool. But the asphalt deck is warped and rutted from years of traffic and lack of maintenance, and perhaps because of the angle of ascent, the trucks have a hard time going up it and have to gear down a lot and literally crawl up the bridge and then use their engine brakes coming down... it's loud, slow, and annoying. So, people like me are always passing on the bridge as much as we can. For pedestrians, there is a sidewalk on both sides but there is no barrier separating you from the traffic so if you have young children, hold onto...

This spectacular arched bridge was completed in 1975 and forms the Gateway to Rio Dulce and the Peten. It's also the entrance to the busiest little village in Guatemala...Fronteras, Río Dulce. After crossing the bridge make a U turn at the end abd enter the small narrow street which leads to...Puerto Fronteras!! where you can hire a lancha to see the sights on the River. If you go early enough you could go through the Great Canyon of The Rio Dulce where the very first Tarzan movie was made. I could go on and on about how spectacular this area is but go explore and discover fir yourself!. The lake, hot waterfalls an old...

The lake itself is pretty but make sure you arrive in the busy chaotic town with enough cash as only 2 atm's (I was told) and both didn't work..or take my MasterCard. On going into a bank still couldn't access funds despite having visa MasterCard and passport..crazy! Was going all around on tuk tuks trying to find somewhere only to be told not possible at every stop...finally found a cajero near bridge that took visa..thankfully! Nobody appears to speak English so make sure your prepared with some necessary spanish phrases if...

We were only here for a short time because we choose to travel this way to go to Livingston and it was a great choice. This route was spectacular because we saw Ell Castillo de San Felipe and the scenery on El Río Dulce was very beautiful.

A very poor design through the city on one road, the traffic cop in the backs up the entire length of this bridge. You're wondering if you'll have time to see the bridge, don't worry you'll probably be sitting on it for 30 minutes.
