Apparently, this is the highest bridge in Central America. And I guess it is impressive to an extent. The big Guatemalan flag in the middle is a photo op (don't worry; tons of people stop in the middle of the bridge for the pic... another car is not going to make a difference), and the views are pretty cool. But the asphalt deck is warped and rutted from years of traffic and lack of maintenance, and perhaps because of the angle of ascent, the trucks have a hard time going up it and have to gear down a lot and literally crawl up the bridge and then use their engine brakes coming down... it's loud, slow, and annoying. So, people like me are always passing on the bridge as much as we can. For pedestrians, there is a sidewalk on both sides but there is no barrier separating you from the traffic so if you have young children, hold onto...

It's also the entrance to the busiest little village in Guatemala...Fronteras, Río Dulce. After crossing the bridge make a U turn at the end abd enter the small narrow street which leads to...Puerto Fronteras!! where you can hire a lancha to see the sights on the River. Read moreThe lake itself is pretty but make sure you arrive in the busy chaotic town with enough cash as only 2 atm's (I was told) and both didn't work..or take my MasterCard. On going into a bank still couldn't access funds despite having visa MasterCard and passport..crazy! Was going all around on tuk tuks trying to find somewhere only to be told not possible at every stop...finally found a cajero near bridge that took visa..thankfully!
