Dark, forgotten treehouse in the back of the property nestled under the freeway bridge and next to another ship yard. Great barbed wire fences but doesn't adequately hold out the noise.NEVER again. BEWARE! This is a ship yard with a restaurant and should bot be considered a place to stay unless you're here on your boat. We came to consider coming to the Rio with our vessel but gratefully because of this experience will save the funds and time for something else. The room is the worst we've ever experienced because of the noise from the bridge which it is under. You may as well forget paying for such accommodations and go ahead and sleep under the bridge at the roadside. For this is exactly what it is except for walls. the bathroom is falling apart, the towels used and the beds and pillows are not worth mentioning. You can hear your neighbours in the next rooms so well you know what they're saying, what they're doing, what they're planning and ALL bodily functions/ Stay at the backpackers at least you can see the face of the people you're bedding with. the Heater doesn't work and because of the language barrier when asked for blankets we received sheets. Theres many other places to stay, this was a mistake of monumental and epic consequences. When asked to refund our additional nights so we could leave for another place they were unwilling to do so. At $77/night in a 3rd world I expected a...
Read moreAs we are sailors and have lived on our sailboat for almost two years, we have been looking for a hurricane season haven during those bad months in summer. Through our boating community, we had learned about the Rio Dulce area in Guatemala. So, at the beginning of the current 2018 season, we decided to head along with other friends from Boot Key Harbor in Marathon, FL to reach Mar Marine to escape the storms. A friend of ours has been living at Mar Marine for about four years and suggested we come and enjoy the area. This was wonderful to us as we went through the likes of Irma last year, but that's another story. After engine issues we had to cancel our escape trip and decided to do a land voyage through Mexico, and Guatemala to Mar Marine. This marina is absolutely wonderful along with a few others all offering marina slips, services, hotel, and a fine restaurant and bar. Mar Marine is very reasonable for motor and sail boaters alike with monthly fees and services at prices not found in the US. Marlene, the owner along with her son Jeremiah, took care of us in a friendly and efficient manner that made us feel at home with ours being so many miles away. The hotel with pool, bars and restaurant were clean and well-managed. We highly...
Read moreAn excellent, nice hotel with friendly and helpful people. With an very fine restaurant. And Marina life, with lots of characters, such as Arthur from Canada, 70-ish, tinkering on their sailing boats, are a nice extra.
And for afficionados of trucker road movies an absolute must. The throaty growl of the monster trucks negotiating the quarter mile incline to its top, 82 feet above the river in low gear, or the raucous thumping of the 12 immense cilinders in the monstrous 6 liter diesel engines, breaking on the down slope with the fuel supply cut off, is a continuous joy till deep in the dark, dark night. The girl at the reception is one of the great actresses: “no Sir, the rooms are far, far away - which is technically correct - from the bridge. You won’t hear a thing!”. You bet. But still, a good...
