A Szent István-barlang felfedezéséről és hasznosításáról a bejárat előtt elhelyezett táblán tájékozódhatunk:

A barlangot a jelenlegi bejárat fölötti meredek hegyoldalban nyíló természetes bejáraton, a függőleges Kutya-lyukon keresztül fedezték fel. Az első dokumentált bejárás Kadič Ottokár, a természettudós nevéhez fűződik, aki 1913-ban kötélhágcsóval leereszkedett a barlangba. A barlangot Ő nevezte el Szent István-barlangnak.

1927-ben, a Palota szálló építése kapcsán, a lillafüredi idegenforgalom fejlesztésének időszakában tárták föl a barlang további járatait, 711 m hosszban, 46 m szélességben. Az üreg idegenforgalmi célú bemutathatósága érdekében 1931-ben 55 m hosszú mesterséges tárót készítettek, és világítással látták el a barlang egy részét.

A barlang befoglaló kőzete triász korú mészkő.

A barlang legtöbb szakasza (Megfagyott vízesés, Meseország, Oszlopok csarnoka) látványos cseppkőképződményeiről kapta a nevét. A barlangot a Bükki Nemzeti Park Igazgatósága üzemelteti. A barlang csak szakvezetővel látogatható. A túra időtartama 30 perc.

Barlangterápia

A lillafüredi Szent István-barlang Fekete-termének mikroklímája, az ingerszegény környezet igen jótékony hatású krónikus légzőszervi betegségben szenvedőkre.

A barlangterápiára alkalmas kúraterem a Fekete-teremben került kialakításra, amely a turisták elől elzárt. Mérések szerint a terem hőmérséklete 10 oC körüli. A relatív páratartalom meghaladja a 80%-ot. Az aeroszol kalcium- és magnéziumtartalma jelentős.

A barlang levegőjének portartalma, baktérium- és gombaszáma elhanyagolható. A radon szintje alacsony. Vízszintes irányú légmozgás nincs. A terem természetes légcseréjét a fölötte lévő óriási kürtő biztosítja.

A Szent Ferenc Kórház Légzőszervi Rehabilitációs Osztályának betegei, akik az egész ország területéről érkeznek, eredményesen gyógyulnak a Szent...

On the hour every hour, tours of the cave. Not as cold as I thought it might be. Staff very friendly and helpful. They initially warned that the guide didn't speak English and gave us a print out. Guide did a super job of showing us around reading out from the print out as she guided us and showed us what she was pointing out. Took around 20 minutes. Very beautiful inside, and the cave is quite magnificant. Think I saw a bat whilst in there. The guides back at the entrance were able to answer any...

It was beautiful to see and in certain spots that are lit well, beautiful pictures can be taken as memorabilia. No flash though. Not needed anyway. Also very important. It's cold in there so carry a jacket. Honestly I wavered it but don't do that. Lastly, it's only in Hungarian. I went with friends so still had fun. They had one piece of paper in English for us so in learning part it's wasn't all that great cause we had to read it and didn't even know the certain spots were being...

You may only enter at hourly intervals in the presence of the guide who will show you around the cave. Even though the guide speaks Hungarian, we were provided an information sheet and the guide was able to point us to the structures that correspond to each segment in the information sheet. Glad to say that the language did not hinder us from enjoying the tour! Tour took around 20min and we were able to enjoy and appreciate the structures in the tour thoroughly

Beautiful caves with an interesting history. Tickets for the hourly excursions begin to be sold around 20 minutes before each one. If you don't know much Hungarian, you will be provided with a shorter printed version of the commentaton in English. There is also plenty to do when waiting, just a bit down the road, you can buy a beautiful round pastry dipped in sugar. I don't know what they call it, but it's essentially a longer version of the Czech trdelník.
